  1. I'm really excited about this #science development of obtaining #compound specific #isotope information from #shell #fossils . This will open up a lot of information about past #ecosystems and #food webs in the near future!

  9. @dantheclamman Incredible - I’m sure you don’t know this but 6 yrs ago I told 2 of your co authors about these issues & developed a mathematical model to prove it & then was drummed out of the lab, had funding pulled, & an EU project screwed all because I dared criticize bivalve #sclerochronology - the high variability of measures, the poor statistical analyses, the absence of a suitable biological growth model - 6 yrs to rebuild my work & find another way #WomenInScience

  14. While laborious, this kind of work is incredibly useful for species that are so short-lived and often have multiple cohorts, sometimes it is the only way to be truly sure which individuals come from which cohort. I found this to be the case with Illex argentinus, as there is lot of mixing on the high seas, it was nearly impossible to figure out which groups were sampled, until we did the ageing, all 809 of them! #fisheries #sclerochronology #management

  15. So how are squid sometimes like trees? Rings form as their ear bones (statoliths) grow, which you can use to age them! 🦑
Each ring that you see here represents one day in a squid's life, in this case Illex argentinus, my study species #sclerochronology #fisheries
