Lately i've been reading "The possibility of an Island", by Michel Houellebecq. I got through half of the book, then i decided to drop it because i found it unbearable.
The main characters are a bunch of awful people, and definitely one reason why society turns for the worst in this "sci-fi" novel. But aside that they have no redeeming quality or fascinating personality that made me want to know more about them and about what they do. They're shallow AND boring.

City by Clifford D. Simak

This book was such a ride from 1st story to the last. The world kept getting more and more alien with each story. It's brilliant. I liked it alright, but not so much that I'm going to read another book by Clifford D. Simak

In Ralph Milne Farley’s 1939 scifi novel The Hidden Universe an engineer in an industrial colony notices odd things - like the length of the days and the fact that there no stars at night. Some wildly inventive imaginative ideas in this book.

Frederik Pohl’s sci-fi novel Danger Moon was published in 1951. There's trouble on the Moon - suspected sabotage at a uranium mine. Reasonably realistic in the light of what was known in 1951 but basically a very conventional story.

Kris Neville's Earth Alert! is a 1953 alien invasion sci-fi novel. A woman sets out to buy a husband. She discovers she can walk through walls and is telepathic. It's something to do with an invisible alien spaceship. Crazy, frenetic fun.

The Lunar Lichen is a 1960 sci-fi novella by Hal Clement. A geologist claims to have discovered lichens on the Moon, but did he really? Did he discover something else? This is fairly hard SF but also a tale of survival with fine suspense.

Henry Kuttner’s novel The Time Trap was written in 1938. An archaeologist is transported back in time, to a highly advanced civilisation that has technology from the distant future. A wild romp through time with plenty of exciting adventure.

Adolphe Alhaiza's Cybele, an 1891 French scientific romance. A time travel story with hypnotism and lots of eccentric ideas. A religio-scientific-political-philosophical utopian novel displaying a major lack of human understanding. Interesting.

Frederick Pohl’s scifi novel A Plague of Pythons dates from 1962. A man is about to be executed but he has a defence - he was possessed at the time. But it’s not demons doing the possessing. Lots of paranoia and despair. Good book.

Milton Lesser’s 1954 novel Slaves to the Metal Horde is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi tale, with an out-of-control robot warrior army and a plague. The Robots may or may not be totally evil. Some good ideas, some nuance, action and some romance.

Hollow Earth Tales, a collection of sci-fi stories written from 1909 to 1939 dealing with the idea of a hollow earth or undiscovered civilisations deep beneath the Earth. The stories are interestingly varied, often outrageous and generally fun.

Emmett McDowell's 1948 sci-fi novel Citadel of the Green Death is set in the distant future. Joel is sent as a slave to the jungle planet Asgard. There are carnivorous plants and humanoids with strangely alien technologies. Quite good.

E.C. Tubb’s Rogue Planet, published 1977, an original novel based on the Space: 1999 TV series. Crew members see and hear things that can't be there and start to go mad. Has a genuinely alien alien. Plus there's accelerated ageing. Pretty good.

Beyond the End of Space is a very early (1933) novel by John W. Campbell, before he became the prophet of Hard SF. A scientist working on the annihilation of matter ends up in another universe. Plus there are gangsters and space battles. Fun.

One of my friends from grad school wrote a fantasy novel! I'm about 2/3 in, and I'm really liking it. The core conceit is that an evil sorcerer finds a book he can talk to who knows anything that's ever been written. It's super fun, and very well plotted--every chapter I'm like "wait, what happens next?!"

The Sea Girl is a 1930 lost world novel by Ray Cummings dealing with a lost world in the deeps of the ocean. As a bonus, there are mermaids. Of a sort. There's also a beautiful but evil undersea empress and atomic submarines. A fine adventure.

This is the exciting, compelling, and totally enjoyable sci-fi series I've been missing since I was an adolescent ripping through Dune, Harry Potter, and Ender's Game. (ugh, what a problematic list!)

Necromancers in space? Queer characters with biting and ridiculous sarcasm? World building that unfolds in amazing twists? Pulse-pounding endings? Very yes. Very recommend.

Just finished the second book in Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb series. It's terrific.

The twists pulled off in the second book still feel fresh, surprising, and yet totally connected with the material in the first. I'm hugely impressed with the plotting.

Clinton Constantinescu’s 1931 novel War of the Universe is certainly not great sci-fi but it features super-intelligent giant bugs, birdmen, enjoyable technobabble and space battles on a truly grand scale so it has some appeal.
