  1. Today my friend stopped by to chat about a project and I showed her some of the custom color tubes I have been working on. She asked how I might scale it up to make it more efficient...

Well I have been literally using clamps, scraps and masking tape... so I could do a lot to improve... but I thought I would start with this.

Drying the solvents carrying the phosphor powder is important. I took a scrap circle I had lying around and made it into a drying manifold that shoots a weak but steady stream of air across the vertical tubes dissuading gravity and encouraging drying. It mostly worked, but it was starting to get clogged with runoff phosphor goop and due to its 12mm closed in design- would be kinda difficult to clean.

So I made a new one. This one uses a larger diameter, hand pulled scrap and has 8 ports in 10mm and 12mm sizes for more tubes drying simultaneously.

  2. I visited with my friend Katie Severance in Philly yesterday. Katie helps me with #Scientific #glass things. We have been chatting about teaching a class together on creating Scientific Apparatus for the #Neon Shop. This visit I am learning the timing a bit better for proposed demo's an topics.
Every time I visit Katie I learn or see something new. Leeroy the dog reminds glassblowers to "make a gripper" hence the lathe tape wraps.

  3. Yesterday I visited my friend Katie in Philadelphia. She teaches Scientific glass at Salem and has worked at some of the best science glass houses in Southern NJ (A place known for science glass). I sought her help in making this double walled mirror tube idea. More on that later. I like the bib and bob of the hose spinning on the lathe. I fabricated the glass hose split adaptor- Katie fabbed the rest until I bent it. #sculpture

  4. I had such a blast taking a #scientific glass class with Sally Prasch at Urbanglass. I learned to make ring seals with condensors, and how to bend a tube within a tube- fun but tricky stuff! I made a maraca, trombone/clarinet instrument that I still need to put a bell on. It would be fun to make a bigger, bass maraca-Tromlinet. Yes, the tube in tube stuff does have some neat neon and plasma possibilities too.
