The Small-Area Global #Elections (#SAGE) #Dataset

Journal: #ScientificDataThe Small-Area Global Elections (SAGE) dataset collects, geocodes, and harmonizes lower-house #parliamentary and #presidential returns for 110 countries and territories from 1948 to 2025, at the smallest unit each electoral authority publishes. It spans 585 country-elections and roughly ten billion votes cast across more than eight million units, and is at the polling station level in more than two-thirds of cases. Returns are released in a single long-format schema with standardized party identifiers that link to major comparative datasets, and every unit carries coordinates and, where available, boundary polygons.

The authors propose a Global Federated Architecture (GFA) — a hybrid model that combines the resilience of federated systems with the transparency of decentralized technologies to safeguard open science data as a global public good.

"Helicopter science" and datasets: Sarah Bratt and colleagues studied the use of Global South (GS) data by Global North researchers (in 3200 Scientific Data papers) , using OpenAlex and an LLM, ReFinEd, to identify entities in Geonames.
The % of GS authors on GS data papers has risen, but on papers using GS data only 35% have a GS researcher as 1st or last author.
p.s. Saying "ding" instead of "next slide" was new to me!

Ireland et al. reviewed the reproducibility of geophysical research and found, despite requirements to make data available, that most of the time data used in studies were not accessible, limiting the opportunity to verify their findings.
