  1. Update the final: woof, it’s a good thing I kept notes. I'll be honest, some of the formulas did not do what I thought they would do.
The colors where I added foaming agents dried almost plastic-y. The magenta formula with the least water stayed 3d when dry, but it's fragile, in that there is air under it. Blue dried a lot more solid than the formula would suggest, so I'm guessing user error in measurement. Unlike the gesso test, this was raw unprimed canvas, and when dry, the paint did not release or have nearly the residue of the gesso test. In fact, only the orange (original) formula is flat to the canvas, all the ones with alkyldimethylamine are textured. The combination of magenta and blue went really weird. Not sure what went wrong. That said, in none of these did I factor the chemistry of the paints.

In other words: Magic! Or Science! Same thing.

  2. 🌳⚡️BREAKING NEWS: Penn State scientists finally figured out how to make trees into glow sticks using a 2013 minivan and some duct tape. Thank you, taxpayer dollars, for funding this crucial tree party lighting experiment! 🎉🔬

  3. I pulled a test bowl of the first run of #perpetualstew.

    It is... delicious.

It has an interesting depth to it-- I'm assuming because most of the base was peppers and mushrooms. There's jalapeños in there that you wouldn't necessarily realize were there... until their heat hits the back of your tongue.

But it isn't a bad heat-- just one that adds another layer of complexity to the broth itself.

And not to mention... the broth is so CLEAR. the only real word I can use to describe it is clear.

Also its finally time for me to go to seep... at 720am.

  4. I started a new jar, in parallel with the old jar. The only difference is that the new one uses distilled water instead of tap water, and about half as much yeast extract. I inoculated the new jar with about 8oz from the old one. #ScienceExperiment #microbiology

  5. A new neutrino detection system built for the Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) was transported 3 miles across the Fermilab campus on Dec. 1. Moving the system was no easy feat, traveling at a maximum speed of 2.5 miles per hour on its journey lasting over 10 hours. Enjoy this short video of the entire move in under two minutes!

    About the detector
As a nearly 20-foot cube, it’s the size of a small house. It weighs 20,000 pounds and contains delicate sensors and wiring that, if rattled too much, could compromise the integrity of the system.

    What's next?
In the coming months, the system will be placed inside a large cryostat, a vessel to cool the system to low temperature that will be filled with liquid argon and complete SBND. In fall 2023, scientists expect to begin receiving data that will shed light on the strange behavior of the ghostly neutrinos.
