The killing of the Ontario Science Centre is one of the most heartbreaking acts of Ford's legacy. It would be difficult to find an Ontarian who is not touched by this institution and outraged at the spurious reasons given for its closure. IMO, Ford is exaggerating building issues in order to add public traffic to his mega spa partner and bury the relocation expense in the parking garage costs.

#ICYMI: #Ontario government shut down the #OntarioScienceCentre citing an engineering report that the building is unstable. An independent review* of the report found that the report did not recommend closure, and that the building's key exhibition areas could continue operating safely. The government seeks to move the science centre to Ontario place to build condos in its place.

What! 👀 Not maintained? Did anyone know & not tell the public, endangering safety? Something else? Hope for full transparency. 🥺
Government is closing the Ontario Science Centre immediately, after report found roof may collapse.
This is not how I wanted it to end. At least a proper send off. Why was the roof not maintained? Who made those decisions, over the years, to defer maintenance?

“In short, they are expecting that 50% more people will visit a facility that is 45% of the size of the current Science Centre, with a significantly reduced staff managing it all.”
It will cost taxpayer $300-$400 million more.
And can you imagine 30 school busses with hundreds of #kids navigating heavy downtown traffic every single day?(My personal thoughts: Yes, the current building needs extensive repair. Perhaps a solution would be to rebuild part of the building, but integrate important architectural features from the original? Put all the parking underground, and that leaves space to build both a community centre and housing on the rest of the property).
