  1. for any #NASA folks still monitoring the #NASAsocial hashtag, please please PLEASE:

    – make it SOP to put up a super simple straightforward one-page mission timeline that has every significant mission event with a built-in TZ converter so folks playing along at home can set their local time zone & get accurate updated timings 🙏

    – make it as low-tech as you can – mostly text, minimal “fancy” crap (JS, WebGL, user-tracking frameworks 🤮, etc.)

    – link to it prominently at / near the top of the mission homepage, maybe with a handy “Next up: $MissionEventName” label as well

    – publish an iCal feed that folks can either subscribe to or download^

    – update the timings as they slip or advance as best you can (and have a single source of truth that’s used to update both the mission timings page & the iCal feed, obvs.)

    – yes, I’m def open to a fully-remote position on your #SciComms team so long as I can mostly work UTC+10ish-friendly hours 😜

    #kthxbai

^ and then also maintain a canonical page with all your mission iCal feeds in one place – something like nasa[.]gov/SpaceNerds/MissionData/feeds/iCal/ would be appropriate 😜

  6. What are the real environmental impacts of data centers? A new paper claims that their heat exhaust leads to land surface temperatures increasing by an average of 2°C (3.6°F) and as much as 9°C (16°F). Andy Masley, a physics teacher turned writer and science communicator, explains the flaws in the research — off-the-wall methodology and misleading framing — that will likely lead to gross misinterpretations and misrepresentations in the media.

  7. Hi #PortfolioDay !

    I'm a health&care advocacy designer and artist.

    My current project is
@illmarks . I began utilizing body mapping art to log my symptoms, but then expanded the practice to include emotional, systemic, and interpersonal aspects of disability.

I most recently partnered with the University of Washington’s School of Nursing as part of a study on healthcare equity and community tools. I taught a virtual workshop to fellow disabled community members on using symptom mapping art to validate their bodily experiences, which was immensely rewarding.

I hope to expand how I can apply my creativity and help my communities, and would love to collaborate!

(The thing I most miss about my work from before I got more disabled and can no longer work full time is interpersonal collaboration, so I'm slowly trying to bring more collaborations back into my life.)

    Please reach out:

  12. Vaccine hesitancy is complex, but, says author and academic Timothy Caulfield, study after study confirms that in the U.S. and Canada, political affiliation is one of the single strongest predictors of vaccination status. He writes for the Toronto Star about what can make a difference: Pre-bunking, debunking, teaching critical thinking and using creative science communication. "Perhaps what’s most important, though, is that we hold governments to account — with our voices and with our votes," he concludes.

  15. Why is it easier for some people to believe in a secret space program, for which there is no good evidence, and simultaneously disbelieve in the real space program's achievements, for which there is so much evidence that is completely publicly available?

Is there some biological hard-wiring to make a "small" fraction of people believe automatically what everybody else rejects?

    Is this evolutionarily adaptive?

  18. Please don't misunderstand me: I'm not saying that this is something we shouldn't do. I think it's something we have to do.

But I think the people who do #sciencecommunication need to prepare themselves for a new onslaught of weaponized stupidity.

The link above mentions how science was done more publicly during COVID. I'm sure the editors meant something different, but the entire US scientific community is being destroyed right now because of what happened then.
