via #StephanieWilliamson of #Sci4XR: PAN Ethiopia have published success in adapting the 'food spray' method to attract more natural enemies of insect pests into vegetable crops and reduce use of Highly Hazardous Pesticides. With a set of good agroecologically sound pest management methods, participatory farmer training and convinced and confident field staff, colleagues now doing trials on zero fungicides and have had great results with replacing synthetic fertilisers

Needed that break before the main act, #CoryDoctorow on his recent neologism and new book, #enshittification. But it was fully occupied by chatting along our row of seats: each others scientific research, #climatebreakdown and #Sci4XR well as #GreenParty

Prof.Jeff Waage (OBE), London School of Hygiene + Tropical Medicine, has been advisor to DEFRA and Natural England. In the face of climate and ecological breakdown, in 2019 he joined Scientists for XR in pursuit of changes not achieved by research and report-writing. He'll lead an online discussion next Monday Oct 13th (19:00) and all scientists are encouraged to join; established, late-career scientists *who want to do more* may find it particularly illuminating. #Sci4XR

Trying to protect small and fragmented populations of rare species or habitat is a doomed strategy because it overlooks the complex web of interactions and processes that make ecosystems work.
"This reframing of conservation goals was first proposed 50 y ago, but the concept has struggled to gain traction..."
