Thinking of changing my profile pic on WhatsApp to just a big banner that says 'FCK CARS' for the benefit of all the whiners on the street group complaining about the mild restrictions to vehicular access since we're on a #SchoolStreet

This behaviour is life-threatening and disgusting.

This morning on our school street (photo left on an ordinary day), a motorist thought it was unacceptable that he was not allowed to drive into the street... a street where children and parents were walking and cycling to school.

After some yelling, the driver accelerated and drove straight past the crowd barriers into the school street... onto a metal pole.

I hope the driver does not get off with a simple fine.

@seeschloss @straphanger Only the school management can apply for a schoolstraat with the Antwerp city administration.

Caveats include: no public transport lines through the street, and no proximity to emergency services (a hospital, fire station…).

@straphanger In Belgium we have also *temporary* school streets, at the times when school starts and stops. For about half an hour, the street is only accessible to pedestrians and bikes.

Permanent school streets are of course even better.

@straphanger A school street ("schoolstraat") does not need fancy infrastructure. Here's a school street in Antwerp (Belgium) being with full access for (only) pedestrians and bikes, every day from 8.25AM until 8.50AM (school starts at 8.45AM). There are usually two adults (and some children) guarding the gate; they're parents, grandparents, teachers and/or neighbours.

This morning I had an exchange with @saskia about a setback with establishing a #SchoolStreet in Bath. Since then I've been thinking about all those #UK local councils that declared a #ClimateEmergency in 2019. I thought I might share here a (not very good paper) I wrote about my experiences with this here in #Eastbourne - what worked, what didn't. Maybe useful for some, I don't know. Would love to hear others!

Very disappointing to see a local council dismantle a #SchoolStreet by stealth. For child safety and health we need more of these designated streets not less.
I daily witness near misses outside my children’s junior school and engines left idling. We need to get back to children being able to safely walk and ride their bikes to school.

@Dasy2k1 @RantyHighwayman Part-time one-way would be a really bad idea for all sorts of reasons (as well as complicated to sign & difficult to enforce). Crucially it would remove a key part of #SchoolStreet impact which is to move drop-off/pick-up point away from the school (apart from #Disabled children or carers).
