This behaviour is life-threatening and disgusting.

This morning on our school street (photo left on an ordinary day), a motorist thought it was unacceptable that he was not allowed to drive into the street... a street where children and parents were walking and cycling to school.

After some yelling, the driver accelerated and drove straight past the crowd barriers into the school street... onto a metal pole.

I hope the driver does not get off with a simple fine.

@seeschloss @straphanger Only the school management can apply for a schoolstraat with the Antwerp city administration.

Caveats include: no public transport lines through the street, and no proximity to emergency services (a hospital, fire station…).

@straphanger In Belgium we have also *temporary* school streets, at the times when school starts and stops. For about half an hour, the street is only accessible to pedestrians and bikes.

Permanent school streets are of course even better.

@straphanger A school street ("schoolstraat") does not need fancy infrastructure. Here's a school street in Antwerp (Belgium) being with full access for (only) pedestrians and bikes, every day from 8.25AM until 8.50AM (school starts at 8.45AM). There are usually two adults (and some children) guarding the gate; they're parents, grandparents, teachers and/or neighbours.
