  1. You don't even have to get rid of copyright entirely to allow this, by the way!

There are set rates if one artist covers another artist's song. Those rates are set by the government and are very low.

There could be similar rates set about printing books, especially in small numbers or by libraries. Maybe it would cost ten cents per book for a library to print their own copy of some piece of classic literature. They'd send those fees to the government and they'd be shared with the publisher.

That's why I focus on "Reform" and not "Elimination" of copyright, because if we only see two extremes, we lose sight of more interesting (and practical) solutions along the way.

  2. If book refreshes at a library concern you because some classic literature will disappear (like it does me!), then the answer is to de-couple the rights of the public to have access to that literature from the profit demands on publishers.

In other words, reform the government sponsored censorship of books that protects the monopolies of publishers and keeps books away from the public- ie reform copyright.

Let anyone print copies of books in either digital or physical form. Then librarians can focus on curating their collections rather than being beholden to the publisher about what they want to print.

  3. Apparently it’s #LibraryShelfieDay so here is our Graphic Novel, Manga, and Picture Book section at work. We’ve grown this collection from a tiny half shelf into the 6 full shelves (plus baskets) of graphic novels, 5 shelves of manga and an overflowing display of picture books.

  4. Who else is going to the American Library Association Annual Conference this weekend? We are literally packing our bags right now to head to San Diego!

Please come say hello to us at Booth 656 in The Library Marketplace to learn about teaching with film, using our films and discussion guides for library events, and get free film resources. Like our film-book pairing ideas.

Our Executive Director Jen Fischer and our Instructional Designer Amy Bowers would love to meet you and answer your questions.

Plus we have some really cool stuff to give away.

Let us know if you'll be there, too!

  5. 📖 📚 📖
If anyone is unable to get a copy of a book that has been banned by their local/school library, I personally volunteer to help find you an electronic copy.
    📚 📖 📚

No one should be restricted from reading something because it acknowledges a person's experience or existence— whether because of race, gender, sexuality, or whatever. My ask is that you keep any copies I give you to help distribute to others.

@ me directly if you need help finding anything.

In the mean time, consider archiving and reading these books, and books like them: ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/freque

  6. Published writers who do school visits: what do you charge? Or, librarians who host authors, what do you pay? Thanks in advance!
