#TheSilenceOfTheGirls sounds (well, you know what I mean) like a very interesting book. Saw the Swedish edition, as well as the second in the series (in English) in the shop today. I have a mile high TBR pile, so I never brought them home.

    I should have, shouldn't I?

Currently reading #Machine by #ElizabethBear and enjoying it.

Just finished #TheGoldenEnclaves by #NaomiNovik, and loved the whole #Scholomance series.

  6. @bookstodon Just picked up #NaomiNovik's #ADeadlyEducation.
    Galadriel isn't a happy girl.

This looks like its going to be a fun read

  7. I've been talking with the devs of this game for years, it's amazing how much work goes into a game before anyone gets to see it. It isn't quite ready yet, but if you enjoy a lighthearted romance game with wizards and fun art, that is coming soon store.steampowered.com/app/211 #gamedev #scholomatch #scholomance

  8. Maybe everyone else already knew this, but I just learned that the silly late-19th-century estate in Sintra that's featured in @naominovik's #Scholomance books is real, complete with the pseudo Templar stuff and the initiation well. It looks just as bizarre as El makes it sound.

  9. So… the first book of Naomi Novik's #Temeraire series didn't really do it for me, so I had pretty much ignored her stuff. Earlier today, almost on a whim, I picked up the first of the #Scholomance books and bloody hell, it's glorious. Inhaled the book in a few hours. Great world building, a fabulous lead character and a kind of Buffy vibe without any of the Whedon ickiness.

I reckon I would have fallen even harder for it if I'd read it in my teens :)

  10. Finished the first trilogy of 2024 last night: Naomi Novik’s Scholomance Trilogy. 🎉

I really enjoyed A Deadly Education, it pulled me out of a dark place. The Last Graduate felt a bit draggy in places, but was enjoyable as well and The Golden Enclaves was a nice ending to the trilogy, but no match for the first book. 👍

I really enjoyed the setting, magic system and protagonists. 😊 9/10 would recommend.

  11. @k8nowak Last night's reading had flavors of #Scholomance, but I'm going to shut up now.

  12. I got some lovely #reading suggestions last week and guess what I did with them? Saved them and reread a series I have read before 🙈 I am a sucker for the
#scholomance series from Naomi Novik. Starting next week, new books!

  13. The #Scholomance trilogy is @naominovik's take on a #SchoolForWizardry:

    It.

    Is.

    *Superb*.

Novik takes a belt-sander to all the crumbling tropes left by lesser writers to reveal fresh wood beneath, fashioning something breathtakingly new:

Oddly, I also read both these in the last few weeks, but my reactions differ: I thought @naominovik stuck the #scholomance landing with Golden Enclaves and pulled it all together in a very satisfying manner. Farseer on the other hand... well, I agree on your bitter comment, but couldn't blame him. Hobb maltreats Fitz so much and so often I don't think I'll read any more of her work.

  15. CW: Minor Scholomance Spoilers

@bookstodon The Golden Enclaves was a real disappointment. It just didn't feel like Novick knew where she was going with the books. The plot is meandering and El's character is all over the place and just feels very inconsistent. The whole book just felt very rushed. The first two books are still excellent but this was a disappointing conclusion.

  16. I've been reading more than usual recently and finished the third book of two different trilogies. The series by Naomi Novick and the by Robin Hobb. Both were very enjoyable on the whole, but didn't quite stick the landing. @bookstodon

  17. The #Scholomance book series by @naominovik is just fantastic. Kept me guessing all the way to the end. This isn’t just a “dark magic school” story, but a rumination on privilege, wealth, the people that get used up for the “greater good” & “the needs of the many”, and people ignoring evil they benefit from it. Novak has the courage to write an abrasive heroine who’s justification for her seemingly toxic behavior takes a while to reveal.

My only notes: Mention Newark, NJ by name!

  18. @clconway @naominovik Naomi Novik hasn’t written anything I haven’t loved. #Scholomance was fantastic. If I had to pick a favorite I’d say Uprooted. Reminded me of a book I loved as a boy, The Face in the Frost.

  19. Time for more hashtags! I am currently #reading:

#Scholomance vol. 3 Golden Enclaves (ugh, I really don't like the way this is going)

#BeyondBlack (I love #HilaryMantel, but I missed this one somehow)

the #Godfather (will watch the movies again when I'm done)

the #ThreeBodyProblem (I feel like I've been reading this for years, I keep having to start over because I forget what's happened)

#KillingFloor (I will finish watching #Reacher on Amazon when I'm done)
