  1. 📣 Our friends at the #ScholCommLab have published a preprint, "The Drain of #ScientificPublishing", and are calling for #research communities, funders, governments, and #universities to "re-communalise publishing to serve #science not the market"

PKP supports this call, and works to develop and maintain free open software for independent scholarly publishing.

  6. At the #OAWeek Indiana University Library Keynote, PKP's Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander shows how 'exclusive databases sustain the oligopoly of academic publishers' - hidden diversity shows up when considering more inclusive databases

  7. Earlier this week, the #scholcommlab published a Statement of Support for PACBI Principles. With it, I reject my university's (SFU's) complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and call them out for restricting my ability to direct the work of @PublicKnowledgeProject in a principled way. www.scholcommlab.ca/pacbi/

  8. Postdoctoral Fellowship on #Preprints and #OpenPeerReview with the #ScholCommLab at Simon Fraser University #SFU!

    Co-directed by @juancommander and @stefhaustein

"This position will support the lab’s broader goal of advancing more equitable, transparent, and sustainable forms of knowledge dissemination..."

International applicants are welcome. Visa sponsorship is available.

This lab does incredible work! Check it out and join this fabulous team:

  9. @BarcelonaDORI @juancommander @stefhaustein @sfu @morebrains

Welcome! Happy to see signatories and supporters growing.

It's exciting that @sfu is the first Canadian University to join in, and hoping that this support from SFU, and #ScholCommLab (associated with PKP, SFU, and the University of Ottawa), will encourage other Canadian Universities to join in!

What a great way to start off the year 🎉

  10. 💡 New article at the #LSEImpactBlog questions aligning #preprints to traditional #academic publications as it undermines the purpose of preprints

The article also presents research investigating the role of preprints and journalists over time.

By Natascha Chtena, PKP Scientific Director Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander and Alice Fleerackers at the #SFU #ScholCommLab

  11. TWO NEW PREPRINTS (about #preprints). Based on interviews with 14 preprint server staff and offer deep insights into the present and future of preprinting

    1. “Does it feel like a scientific paper?”: A qualitative analysis of preprint servers’ moderation and quality assurance processes: doi.org/10.31222/osf.io/mp6ky

    2. Preprint servers and journals: Rivals or allies? doi.org/10.31222/osf.io/fuydh

Super excited to share this great work led by Dr. Natascha Chtena (researcher at the #ScholCommLab )

  12. At the #STI2024 conference this week, along with a pretty big contingent from the #scholcommlab. I don't come to bibliometrics conferences very often, but I'm excited to get to spend time with all these folks!

  13. (another) NEW PREPRINT! We document how the media have reduced their use of preprints post-pandemic.

Proportion of stories with preprints now BELOW where we predict based on pre-pandemic trends.

  14. NEW PREPRINT: "From impact metrics and open science to communicating research: Journalists' awareness of academic controversies".

Drawing on interviews with health and science journalists, we describe how questions of research integrity, #peerReview, and #openscience shape their practices.

  15. Another great collaboration with colleagues at the #ScholCommLab: @stefhaustein @juancommander @leighbutler , Maddie, and Nina

APC dataset: >36,000 data points from 8,712 journals by six publishers, 2019-2023. doi.org/10.7910/DVN/CR1MMV.

  16. @williamgunn So glad to be into Spring... riding on a high of a lot of cool work coming out from my #ScholCommLab and with #PKP .

    You?!

  17. 📢 "We need to rethink the way we identify diamond open access journals in quantitative science studies"

  22. Join us for a #scholcommlab webinar: "Talking Open Science: OS debates and policies during the pandemic." Jan 24th at 10-11:30 PT. Registration required: sfu.zoom.us/meeting/register/t

We will present insights from two studies that empirically examined how OS was discussed during the pandemic: one covering the international debate on OS and another on how equity, diversity, and inclusion and public participation were reflected in OS policies and recommendations.

  23. This is a must read if you're interested in scholarly publishing, #openaccess, or #openscience

Also, shout out to the wonderful researchers who put it together at the #scholcommlab 🔥

  24. Here's a #ThrowbackThursday post from #OAWeek!

  26. And finally, also discussed on Day 3 of #pkpHan2023, the results from "Identifying Metadata Quality Issues Across Cultures"

By PKP members Julie Shi, Mike Nason, Marco Tullney, and Juan Pablo Alperin!

How do metadata and communities "press up against each other to intentionally reflect (or not) cultural meanings"?

  27. From the #scholcommlab's Alice, who is not yet on Mastodon:

I'm so excited to see our review of journalists' use of #openscience research finally out in the world

We read a huge pile of #scicomm & #scholcomm research to try to understand how journalists use #preprints and #openaccess papers

    Here's what we found... 🧵

  28. The physicians who are popular vloggers, are they "doctors' or "influencers"? How do they want to be seen by their audiences?

Our latest article at @IJoC_USC answers these questions: ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/articl

  29. Just finished a draft to a paper that we first conceived with @lariviev and @stefhaustein back in 2015 (!!). It's been hanging over my head for 8 years. The paper is about Second-order citations—an #altmetrics concept first described by Priem and Costello in 2010, but that nobody has ever tried to materialize. Together with Stef and Alice (of the #scholcommlab), we did a small case study as a proof-of-concept. It's small, but has incredible potential. Excited to post it as a preprint soon(ish).

  30. I recently learned about FNU as part of the Metadata For Everybody project we're doing at #pkp and the #scholcommlab. This is a nice post about someone's experience of having a metadata requirement imposed on a crucial part of their identity. Thanks for sharing!
