Academic and intellectual life in Palestine has a long history of attacks, and in Gaza as many as twelve universities have been destroyed. This deliberate destruction of education systems and infrastructure is known as scholasticide.
The exhibition ‘Picturing Scholasticide’ uses photography and testimonies to show the impact of these attacks.

Israel blocks all pencils and paper from being brought into Gaza. No explanation. No justification. Just banned.
#scholasticideThese are just two of the hundreds of items arbitrarily blocked by Israel, including most medical supplies and almost anything that could be useful in rebuilding, or even simply moving rubble to search for the many thousands of bodies known to be buried by Israeli explosions over the last two years.
Some of the most telling banned items have been:
• baby formula
• seeds (including any fresh fruit or vegetables)There is no possible justification for these decisions other than the goal that many Israeli leaders have been repeatedly open in stating: making #Palestinian life in #Gaza impossible.

UN expert accuses Israel of scholasticide in Gaza
More than 660,000 children are currently out of school in Gaza, and of its estimated 815 schools, 97 percent have been damaged or destroyed, Farida Shaheed says.
The UN special rapporteur on the right to education described the collapse of Gaza’s education system due to Israel’s war as a “#scholasticide”, which is the intentional destruction of educational infrastructure or the targeting of teachers and academics.

Kind reminder: Attributions towards and accusations against #Israel, how extreme they may seem to some, are never antisemitic if they are factually correct, e.g. confirmed by independent UN committees or the International Criminal Court or the International Court of Justice or major human rights organizations or many scholars of the respective disciplines or independent and verified journalistic works etc.

Dear colleagues at #DH2025 and members of @adho.org, I would deeply appreciate an official stance from our professional association(s) towards the #scholasticide and wilful destruction of material and immaterial cultural heritage of predominantly Arabic-speaking societies committed by Israel in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, and beyond, including many of the servers that held the only copies of digitised cultural heritage in Gaza.
Two hours ago, Israel bombed buildings in central Damascus directly adjacent to the national library, which houses invaluable collections and often times the only copies of textual cultural heritage surviving after more than a decade of civil war and the uprising against the Regime of Bashar al-Assad.

In the United States, under the leadership of Donald Trump, historical amnesia has taken on a similarly insidious form, one that deliberately fosters ignorance, particularly surrounding the nation’s deep-seated histories of racial violence, colonialism and the ongoing struggles for justice. Books are banned, critical ideas erased from the curriculum, history is whitewashed, dissenting educators fired or threatened with prosecution, and students protesting for Palestinian freedom are abducted, detained and denied due process."
