  1. hi guys, reminder that schizophrenia and schizoaffective CAN be comorbid w/ DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder)

i think one of the best examples of this (despite not being diagnosed w/ DID) is Gene Meredith

TW past this point: mentions of murder, mania, covid, abuse, bullying, smoking, nudity

Gene Meredith is a killer that was shown on Season 2 Ep 1 of The Killer Speaks, a show by A&E that lets the killer speak on what they did, tell the story, and give details of their life before

Gene was arrested and convicted for the 2006 murder of Rose Torres, a 51 year old excorrections officer. while being questioned, Gene kept on switching between himself and this "voice" he called rage and anger. rage and anger stated "i've been takin care of Gene his whole life!" pointing to DID

Gene started hearing these voices when he was 18[1]. he joined the air force around that time. his roommate was pushing him around and bullying him. the voices told him to hit his roommates w/ an iron so that he would "never do it again". Gene managed to fight off the voices and put the iron down. he got a medical discharge and started taking medications

Gene met Debbie Bailey, she was gonna let him move in with her, but was eventually convinced to not let him move in by family and friends

at this time, before being told that he couldnt move it, his life was finally getting better. he was finally getting a family again, and so, he stopped taking his medication, started drinking, and thats when the voices came back[2]

on the night of Rose's murder, Gene met Rose and they went to a bar. security footage shows Gene looking to the right and talking to someone that wasnt there. when Rose took his last cigarette, the voices got loud, saying that Rose was just like Debbie, and to take her out

Gene took Rose to an alley, told her to remove her clothes, then stabbed her to death. every time he stabbed, the voices got quieter until they stopped. he wiped off the blood on the knife with a plastic bag and threw it away. he went home, took a shower, and went to sleep. the voices were like "it was almost perfect, but you forgot one thing. the plastic bag. the police are gonna find it and they'll find your fingerprints and youre gonna go to jail"

Gene took Debbies van, blue with 2 white front doors, without her knowing, and went back to the alley, but 2 people had already found Rose's body. Gene went up to the garbage can next to Rose's body, and tried to find the bag[3]

one of the people are like "you cant leave" and Gene said "oh but i have to" and the person was like "the police should already be here" and Gene got scared and drove off in the van

After that Gene slept good, according to him, he felt no remorse for what he did

the morning after, he decided that Debbie was gonna be next. however, police already had a lead on him

Gene got to Debbies, went to the kitchen, almost grabbed a knife, but then police knocked on the door. Gene willingly went with police to be interviewed

Gene said that he went to Debbie's on his bike, asked to use her van to go get beer, and thats what he did, according to him. but then he says he did go to the alley and stopped because he saw the 2 people and Rose's body. he told the people that there was blood in the dumpster (garbage bin). he notes that he did tamper with evidence but said that he didnt stab anyone

During the interview, Gene kept on looking to the right, as if talking to someone. then, a voice he calls "Rage and Anger" took over, and spoke. RAA said they had nothing, no murder weapon, nothing. the officers said that they wanted Gene back, but RAA said that he'll give back Gene when hes (RAA) ready

RAA said that he killed Rose because she wasn't appreciating a guy that was helping her[4]

When Gene comes back, he seems that he doesnt know where he is. he still denies killing Rose, but RAA said that he killed her, not Gene, "Gene dont have no spine!"

when the interviewers leave (with Gene's sandals, because evidence), RAA says "now im in trouble" and "they're gonna find blood on those"

he is charged with Rose's murder and sentenced to 999 years without parole

he is sent to an institution and diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder[5]

at the time of the 2014 episode, he was still hearing the voices despite being on medication. at the end of the episode, when asked if he still hears voices, he says yes and that they're helping him answer the questions[6]

Gene died on November 18, 2020 due to Covid. he was 62

[1]: Gene was abused by his stepfather and bullied by people at school. in some cases alters can hide themselves until the person is out of that environment, in which they can show themselves. im pretty sure Gene’s schizoaffective symptoms were worse because of the trauma but im not sure
[2]: the alters couldve hidden themselves until Gene stopped taking medication
[3]: unsure if he found the bag
[4]: loss of grip on reality makes people with schizoaffective and schizophrenia believe things that arent true
[5]: schizoaffective disorder is a disorder where you meet the full criteria for schizophrenia but also a mood disorder
[6]: in schizophrenia/affective, the voices can be positive or negative but they're disorganized they dont sit down and help a person answer questions. this points to DID

  2. Had a phone meeting with a caseworker regarding my SSDI and SSI disability details today. Pleasantly surprised to find out I'll be getting more than double the pay I had mentally prepared for, and 4x what I'm getting currently on state disability (which isn't much).

The hope is to be able to pay off current large debts from the back pay I'll get, and then get a low income rent apartment, and get out of my 15 ft camper. Been living in camper for close to 2 years I believe, and I'm super over it. But, I keep telling myself that I'm lucky to have a place to live that isn't on the street.

  3. CW: Meds, Mental Illness, positive

Lamotrigine saved me from the rapid cycling bipolar symptoms I was experiencing from my schizoaffective disorder. It just deleted the symptoms. Its been over a year now that I've been relieved.

  4. CW: MH, informational? Imposter Syndrome

I've had imposter syndrom specific to my various diagnoses bad for about the past year (not related to other longer running imposter syndromes) or more. I've worried that I would have been found not mentally ill enough to get on disability because I've been pretty stable.

Being stable doesn't mean no symptoms though, they have just been more manageable. For example I haven't been having hallucinations or delusions, symptoms of schizoaffective, but have had other schizoaffective symptoms like severe lack of motivation, emotional blunting, inability to experience pleasure from activities I once enjoyed, and asociality. There's also severe cognitive issues I experience like issues with executive function and working memory which are permanent. The asociality has probably contributed to my lack of presence here on mastodon.

Fortunately I'm on a med that is really good at repressing the bipolar symptoms of schizoaffective, but... That also contributes to imposter syndrome.

Anyways, I worried that because I'm not currently experiencing delusions or hallucinations I would be denied disability. Its a pretty silly worry tho, because I have other symptoms. But this doesn't determine whether or not I have imposter syndrome.

My hope is now that I'm finally getting on disability my imposter syndrome will fade at least some.

  5. These are the diagnosese listed off for consideration to determine my disability:

    Schizoaffective disorder
    Autism
    PTSD
    ADHD
    Anxiety disorder
    Borderline personality disorder
    Alcohol use disorder ("in remission")
    Gender dysphoria

When they make the consideration they take the totality of all relevant diagnosese, not just the primary one. It's incredible that I even had to appeal, that they originally denied me having disability. This shit is disabling. Schizoaffective is also a 2 for 1, being symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar wrapped up in one nice little package.

  6. Judge ruled in my favor, I won my SSDI hearing for disability!

It was a very quick hearing, the psychiatric specialist played immense role, i didnt have to answer any questions.

**Edited to add a relevant hashtag.

  7. Have been having tremors from my antipsychotic med, so now im trying out a new Rx of propranolol which i guess is a beta blocker and seems pretty benign.

I probably could skip taking the propranolol because the tremors dont often bug me. Mostly its people noticing and bringing it up to me out of concern. The tremors are only a problem sometimes (its inconsistent) doing fine motor activities. Lol, you should see me trying to eat soup!

I could also try a smaller dose of olanzapine but I dont want to mess with a good thing--have been riding pretty stable for a while now and have already lowered the dosage once recently. Id rather have tremors than psychosis.

Until this last adjustment i have been prescribed 5 mg over the fda recommended max dose, so now im down to 20 mg. Anyways, I plan on giving this new med a shot.

  8. I haven't had to use my rescue med, resperidone, for psychosis in 7 months.

Before my last med change I was having to take it every 1 to 3 weeks. That was when I was on seroquel for my primary antipsychotic. Now I'm on olanzipine for my primary and it works well for me, even though it's a high dosage. I still take seroquel but at a very low dosage as needed for anxiety.

I do experience fatigue, as a side effect I believe, but it is worth it when weighing against the benefits. I also have a lot of apathy and some cognitive difficulties, and lack of motivation, but these are not necessarily side effects, just shit i have to deal with because of schizoaffective disorder. The lack of motivation is probably why I haven't been posting on mastodon.

  9. I wish that my mom and I had been born 20 years later. Maybe 30 and I was still a baby.

Regardless of if it is a better or worse time in general, people have a much better understanding of what #tourettes is now, which we both have very badly, in a form that doesn't fit ignorant people's stereotype.

I didn't even know until 27. She never did.

She was misdiagnosed as #schizoaffective and so was I for a while. Everyone just thought we were crazy, and so did we.

  10. A story of a woman who didn't know her brother was schizophrenic until he was an adult.

    huffpost.com/entry/mental-illn

Do we, as a society, stigmatize others by using DSM-V mental diagnoses words as a replacement phrase for "mentally ill", or even worse, "crazy" or "insane"?

What if it were you or in your family?
