Why rejoice in the misfortune of others

One way to feel my social status improving is if someone else lowers theirs. And so, when I see someone mess up in ways that cause them to lose face, and thus lose social status, I can feel a burst of satisfaction as my own status is raised, at no cost to me.

Pourquoi se réjouir du malheur d'autrui

L'une des façons de sentir que mon statut social s'améliore est que quelqu'un d'autre abaisse le sien. Ainsi, lorsque je vois quelqu'un commettre des erreurs qui lui font perdre la face, et donc son statut social, je peux ressentir un élan de satisfaction en voyant mon propre statut s'améliorer, sans qu'il m'en coûte quoi que ce soit.
