Part of Theresa J. Martin's keynote at the South Carolina Beekeepers conference was about avoiding drift amongst hives. Her point is that if bees accidentally go to the wrong one because of faulty navigation or a breeze that blows them off course, the mixing becomes a disease and pest vector.
Her advice is to not do what most people do - ourselves included - and have a bunch of visually identical boxes in close proximity facing the same way. Her advice is:
- space them out as far as you can with the room you have
- make them all look different
- face them different directions
all subject of course to practicalities of your bee yard. For the time being, we rotated one 90 degrees (the other is weak and just requeened so we opted to not mess with it.) We did do this and will get these guys in there the next time we are in the hives. At the local beekeeper meeting, I won a sheet of stencils in the raffle so why not use them?
We have 3 deeps and 1 medium currently in service so rotating through will take a while. Going forward, we'll decorate any newly acquired boxes before they see service. First year has a whole lot to learn and figure out how you like to do it.

There were only 3 items on the ballot for Santa Clara County: Prop 50 (CA Redistricting), Measure A (raising taxes to cover shortcomings in $ after federal cuts) and County Assessor. I was surprised (in a good way!) to see the high turnout.
Anecdotal I know but still felt good. People came with their family to vote, I saw a father with his young daughter demonstrating to her what democracy looks like. Really great stuff.

Now certified to wear a #SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) - or, as we say in Germany: #Atemschutzgeräteträger! Training at Potsdam fire department was very interesting (and equally exhausting) 🔥 #firefighting
