Scarlet tanagers are a challenge to photograph (in my limited experience). They have a red that fluoresces in the sun, so are easy to blow out. Bright shade is everyone's friend, these critters, especially.

Yellow in the Undergrowth

Here’s a scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea)—female, I believe. I captured this image years ago while she lingered in an oak tree just beyond my fence. It was the first time I’d photographed one, and I remember thinking: maybe I’ll see a male someday. Who knows.

If you’re captivated by indigo buntings and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:

Not great pics (it was very dark in the understory, and the birds were being coy) of a male and female #ScarletTanager.

Tanager Among Leaves

This image is of a scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea).

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Bright Yellow Bird in the Wild

Here is a photo of a female scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea). Unfortunately, the chance that I have of seeing one of these around here is during migration. These birds are members of the family Cardinalidae and are closely related to cadinals, buntings, and grosbeaks.

Here is a scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea), female I think, on her way to South America, I'm sure. She was hanging around in an oak tree beyond my fence. This is the first time to photograph one of these, maybe I'll see a male. Who knows.

"Male Scarlet Tanagers are among the most blindingly gorgeous birds in an eastern forest in summer, with blood-red bodies set off by jet-black wings and tail. They’re also one of the most frustratingly hard to find as they stay high in the forest canopy singing rich, burry songs. The yellowish-green, dark-winged females can be even harder to spot until you key in on this bird’s chick-burr call note. In fall, males trade red feathers for yellow-green and the birds take off for northern South America." - allaboutbirds.org

They came back!
(Video, but no sound needed.)

Brooklyn is on the Atlantic Flyway. I'm just a half-mile south of Prospect Park, a fave/famed birding spot.

From the start, I've designed my backyard, using native plants, like a clearing in the woods. It works.

All kinds of birds drop in, especially during Spring/Fall migrations. The stone birdbath is a favorite. Berries Summer & Winter.

Two pairs of these live in front of my apartment. They have been copulating a lot recently.
