  1. A quotation from Steven Levitt

No one is more susceptible to an experts fearmongering than a parent. Fear is in fact a major component of the act of parenting. A parent, after all, is the steward of another creature’s life, a creature who in the beginning is more helpless than the newborn of nearly any other species. This leads a lot of parents to spend a lot of their parenting energy simply being scared.

Steven Levitt (b. 1967) American economist and author
Freakonomics, ch. 5 “What Makes A Perfect Parent?” (2005) [with Stephen Dubner]

  5. A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

There were all kinds of things of which I was afraid at first, from grizzly bears to “mean” horses and gunfighters, but by acting as if I was not afraid, I gradually ceased to be afraid.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901–1909)
Autobiography, ch. 2 “The Vigor of Life” (1913)

  10. A quotation from Molly Ivins

This has happened before in our history — in fact, it’s a pretty predictable reaction to fear. We get so rattled by some big Scary Thing — communism or crime or drugs or illegal aliens or terrorism — something that scares us so much, we think we can make ourselves safer by giving up some of our freedom. Now, not only does that not hold a drop of water as a logical proposition but it has consistently proved to be an illusion as a practical matter. Empirically, when you make yourself less free, you are not safe, you are just less free.

Molly Ivins (1944-2007) American writer, political columnist [Mary Tyler Ivins]
Bill of Wrongs, Introduction (2007) [with Lou Dubose]

  12. NIST's latest "security scare" 😱 is like a B-grade #horror #flick starring #DeepSeek as the misunderstood monster 🧟, with no evidence of wrongdoing, but plenty of imaginative fear-mongering! 🎃 Our author insists he's got all the juicy details (or just another #opinion #piece crying wolf 🐺).

  13. Quite a scare!

During the nightly SniffiVerse™ walkies on Wednesday, 28/05/2025, Arwen had a moment where she lost control of her paws. She got all wobbly, and unstable. I sat down next to her, and I held her close to me, while she was recovering... And then, she acted like nothing had happened at all. But, it gave me quite a scare. We got back, safe and sound, and after a bit, I sat down and I wrote this long Toot on Mastodon. As I felt that it was a powerful Toot, I decided to use the long text for this blog post. It's a long post, and I talk about health and death, sadness, scares, worries and fears. So, if you click the "read more" bit, you will see these things discussed. It's nothing too bad, but it can be a trigger for those of you who have dealt with pets, with the journey slowly coming to an end, and all the sadness that comes with it... […]

  16. #DonaldTrump Uses 1 #Word To #Appeal To #Female #Voters. Here's Why It Should #Scare You.

"the use of protect and #Protector, sets off #alarmbells for me as a #former #member of the #evangelical #church."

I heard the word “protector” often growing up in the #Texas #BibleBelt. When I hear it, the word that springs to mind is not protector — it’s #predator.
