  1. Just finished the final episode of Bron/Broen ('The Bridge'). After 4 seasons I almost didn't want to watch the last episode knowing there'd be no more.

As a bit of a connoisseur of Scandinavian Noir, I'd say it's a coin toss between this show and Deadwind, for the best example of the genre.

  2. #booksky #pukapuka 💙📚🇳🇿 finally got my hands on this. It’s prob been over a year since I read the last book and now she’s put out a fourth in the series. Love #ScandiNoir

  3. The bit that you skip #198: a-ha – The Sun always shines on TV

The cruelest lesson of life is that of achieving a goal, and then having it taken away from you right away. All that effort, pain, and sacrifice, gone in a snap. It’s not uncommon for this to happen to relationships and it’s understandable: we might overlook red flags because of several factors which might be concomitant.

A few of those red flags: bad relationship with the parents, intolerance to other viewpoints, passive aggressiveness, constant putdowns, breadcrumbing, leaving the stupid toilet lid up (or messy).

I don’t believe I’m alone on this, and I’ve been part of this before. I’ve fallen head over heels many times over the wrong person, and a few days after the inevitable break-up (if it even managed to reach the relationship stage), I go back to this track.

a-ha took the world by storm (deservedly) with Take on Me, a perfect symmetrical track with a memorable video. The Sun Always Shines on T.V. takes that happy ending and burns it to the ground in the very first seconds of the video, handwaving it and moving on to the next thing. It’s brutal. It’s cold. It’s so … Scandi Noir!

No hate for Take on Me, but I think The Sun Always Shines on T.V. is the better song. A moodier pace, akin to a The Cure song. “Don’t ask me to defend the shameful lowlands of the way” is such a dramatic line that is swiftly delivered, with no mercy on heart, no sweetness of tongue. This should be your fave break up song. Not that I wish you to experience this soon.

  4. The Mood & State Of European TV Detectives - Mapped
    --
    H/T @Alasdair Beckett-King
I do love my European detective shows – Salvo Montalbano in Sicily, Kurt Wallander in Sweden, Saga Norén & Martin Rohde in Denmark AND Sweden, ‘Piet’ Van der Valk in Amsterdam, Endeavour Morse in Oxford, Jules Maigret in Paris, Geordie Keating and a revolving Anglician vicar in Cambridge & surrounds, and many more
I have been lucky enough to visit Ragusa & Punta Secca, Amsterdam, and Oxford – but still need to get to the Scandiwegian locations, Paris & Cambridge…

  6. The real Scandi noir: how a filmmaker and a crooked lawyer shattered Denmark’s self-image.

The Black Swan follows a repentant master criminal as she sets up corrupt clients in front of hidden cameras.

A parade of people – members of motorcycle gangs, entrepreneurs, lawyers, real-estate barons, politicians – trooped through to recount their sins to Amira Smajic.

  8. Denmark gets its self-image shattered by a #filmmaker and a lawyer, proving even the happiest country can have its dark, drama-filled days. 🎬👨‍⚖️ The real Scandi noir: where IKEA meatballs meet legal scandals! 🍽️⚖️

  9. This does not have a single attractive character. No one for the viewer to identify with, no one one could possibly empathise with. 5/10 ⭐️

Technically very well done but ghastly.

  10. Watching some Norwegian crime on TV, when a spot of Norwegian black metal comes into the storyline. Apparently Witch Club Satan is a new-ish band who sing about themes of feminism and witchcraft.

  11. Taking a break from #fantasy and dipping back into #ScandiNoir. Enjoying this so far. I've read the previous books in the series and it's easy to get back into.

  14. Re- #Watching #TheBridge (now on Stan in Australia)

#ScandiNoir at it’s best. In the first 2 seasons Swedish detective Saga Noren (Sofia Helin) is teamed with Danish detective Martin Rohde (Kim Bodnia).
I now recognise Bodnia from his role as Konstantin in #KillingEve, and I’m delighted to be reminded many moments are deeply moving. Equally impressive is that The Bridge is not the usual detective story: the search for motives behind crimes depicted highlights important issues like climate change.
(e.g. I almost missed a throw-away reference to the dumping of toxic waste in West Africa. Which is to say the producers have a world-view I find refreshing.)

#TheBridge 2011 Scandi version has been remade in several languages; as The Tunnel (UK); The Bridge (Mexico); The Bridge (Estonia/ Russia); The Bridge (Malaysia/ Singapore); Der Pass (Germany/ Austria); Gefyra (Greece/ Turkey).

    ———-
The interview linked below has a great comment from Sofia Helin, (which has helped me understand why I might be loathe to get involved in personal discussions of some public figures.) The Murdochs of this world are as much a symptom as a cause, and I need hope we can fix systems in spite of them.

… But there is no naming of names in Sweden. It’s all about “structures” that have to be changed, not about demonising individuals like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. “Creating a monster absolves us of responsibility,” says Helin.

  15. Bit of a run recently on audio books - picked this series because it was on the library's site and thought I'd give borrowbox a go.

Fatal Isles, Wild Shores and Cruel Tides by Maria Adolfsson (Doggerland Series 1, 2 & 3) - set on a now submerged (hence mostly made up) location en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doggerla which is very well imagined in the books. They are police procedurals with a hefty concentration on the personal life of the central character - DI Karen Eiken Hornby.

Bridge, The Killing, Wallander, alles mit Morse, Frost, Prime Suspect, Shetland, Hinterland, Luther, Trapped, Midsumer etc. sind dabei schon bekannt (und hiermit auch weiterempfohlen ;-). #serientipp #fernsehen #streaming

    Absolutely love #ScandiNoir #NordicNoir

Ch.4 is my normal go to place, have watched most of the stuff on there, but very, very low streaming ability atm with the weather here and having to use phone as a hotspot.

  18. Right now I'm looking for some #ScandiNoir #Audiobooks. Planning on sitting in my comfortable house and doing close to nothing. LOL. Just love that about the #Audiobooks; I'm doing something but kinda not.

  19. The Wordle Murders

Mads Mikkelsen and Björk play Scandinavian homicide detectives on the trail of a madman who strings them along with one 5-letter clue every day. If they don't guess the clue in 6 tries, somebody dies.
