  1. A Medicare scammer called today. (They call most week days, including holidays.) She said "This is Emily with Medicare Providers, how are you today?"

I said, "Ugh, I WAS fine."

She hung-up on me with no further ado.

  2. One of the most pathetic scam callers who called the wrong person on the wrong day.

Told me there was an unauthorized access to an online Bank I've never used.

Spent 30 minutes acting like an old man who doesn't know how to use computers before he realized I'm fucking with him.

  3. I sang "Add me to your Do Not Call List, I don't want to be called" to a Medicare scammer today. He sang, "I will add you to our do not call list once we complete this process, sir." I kept singing and he hung-up. You know, I expected him to hang-up as soon as I sang.

Scammers never add you to their Do Not Call list though, because they don't maintain one. I'm on the national Do Not Call registry already.

  4. Scamcaller: "Hello I am calling from the technical department at British Telecom about your computer virus and internet connection?"

Me: "Your company hasn't been called that in about twenty years."

  5. Ugh. I've had three phone calls today so far, from mobile numbers with an automated message reading "This is Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, a letter has been sent…"

  6. Interesting. I had a scam call earlier and accidentally mashed the "5" button. They immediately hung up!
It seems like I might have a few options for automatic screening...

    * Answer the call with a "hello?" and see if there's a "churrup" sound (scammer joining).
    * Answer the call and don't say anything, see if the other end does. (after about 10-20 seconds scam calls will drop)
    * Play a short DTMF beep on connect, followed by a message (scam calls will drop after the beep)

  7. Okay, I guess I get the _principle_ of scam calls - call someone from random numbers until you find some sucker willing to hear your pitch.

But what's the point of this _barrage_ of calls from random numbers that comes in waves? Just now I got calls from three different numbers within a span of two minutes or so!

Do they somehow think I'll respond to the third call after I had not reacted to the first two?

Really, what _is_ the psychology behind this process?

  8. Had yet another #robocall #scamcall on my #AAISP SIP line this morning. I've fallen down a rabbit hole: how can I block these calls?
The spectrogram is very distinctive. Call pickup is followed by an unnaturally low noise level for a couple of seconds.
    Then there's a blip.
    Then the noise level rockets.

  12. I think I just won the #scamcall Olympics.

1st scammer calls, and before I can even hang up, the second scammer calls.

I hang up on each of them, and almost immediately a third scammer calls.

I'm tempted do away with my phone entirely.
