On this rainy afternoon, baritone sax in the sheltered area of the patio. The cardinals, who are very feisty right now, were not amused by this raspy loud bird, and came to the dogwood to bark and set things straight about just whose bird feeder it is.

The saxophone's metal slowly warms in your hands, as it takes in your breath. Which, being breath, gives a little moisture to the leather pads. Which swell just a little, sealing more as you play and the horn warms. The initial effort gives way to the decades of time spent in this place; you push in the mouthpiece a little -- altissimo was flat. You begin to work the horn, and your sense of music: what is familiar, what is known, what is new territory?

The next development in #saxophones should be the replacement of those lengthy, imprecise, mechanical keyworks with compact, precise, micro encoders. This will not only make keying more precise, but will also simplify the construction and will reduce the price considerably.

The saxophone is officially banned by the Catholic Church. Pope Pius X banned the saxophone from churches in 1903 in his Motu Proprio On Sacred Music saying the instrument "may give reasonable cause for disgust or scandal" and "is unworthy of the House of Prayer and of the Majesty of God". The ban has never been officially lifted.

Spent some time with the soprano, and later, the tenor (I guess it's Bb day today), working through some early 20th century tonalities discussed in Alex Ross' "The Rest is Noise": diminished seventh, resolving in different directions.
Those Austrian guys sure loved tritones. Gawd I love tenor.

@[email protected] This reminds me of a story, that was told at Bennington College, in the late '70s when I attended, about one of my instructors in the Black Music Division. Let's call him S.
As the story goes, S lived in North Bennington, and was in the habit of coming out onto his porch in the early morning to work out on his tenor sax. His musical style, although it could at times be quite lyrical, also could be very free, very fast, flurries of notes, and loud.
Well, his neighbors, indeed the entire borough of North Bennington, were not impressed by this. His morning roostering led to the passage of a local noise ordinance.
