For the last month, in between other jobs, I've been slowly preparing some ground.
Hauled material around with a improvised dump trailer (awkward, but I made do), leveled the area, brought in two long concrete pylons and pushed them into position.
Now they just need to be leveled and bedded.

Of course now you'll be wondering what a Hewsaw is.
It's a fully automated, computer controlled and configurable sawmill.
First there's four large cutting heads (two per axis) that simply chip away the round part of the log, there are no flitches cut, just woodchips which are typically burnt to heat the drying kilns.
Then there's an adjustable stack of circular saws, cutting the shaped log into planks or beams.
The rest are just feeders and guides, which as you can see are also configurable in case you want to cut curved logs as in this animation:

I have A LOT to do around the #homestead this weekend:
- do some more work on the #chicken coop
- integrate the young #chickens with the #ducks in the coop
- put up a #bat house
- install a #bird feeder cam and two Ring floodlight cams
- install a windshield and a winch on the #utv
- cut down more dead trees
- take out the #chainsaw and clear some fallen trees where we want to start a path around the property
- maybe put together my new #sawmill
- maybe #mill some trees
- make some progress converting the garage into a #woodshop

Welp! Turns out the wireless temperature sensor won’t report higher than 140°F due to a sanity check in #rtl_433. Fortunately the wired temperature sensor tracked the temperature all the way up to 164°F today. And it wasn’t even sunny all day!

We have a #sawmill (shown in the photo) and the kiln will be for drying the lumber as it comes off the mill.
It'll hold up to ~1,500 board feet at a time. For reference, an 8ft long 1x6" board is 4 board feet, so it can hold almost 400 of those.
It should take about a month to completely dry a load of #lumber during the summer.
We'll then use the lumber in our house #build for siding, flooring, furniture, trim work, etc.

Achievement unlocked! Our solar kiln didn’t just reach 100°F today for the first time ever, it blew through the milestone - 114°F (45°C). Not bad when the outside temperature reached a high of 57°F (14°C).
Onwards and upwards!

Electrical rough in for the solar kiln is complete. Been working on the baffle, fan mounts and insulation. Made good progress this weekend - it was only 20°F outside, but it was over 70°F inside when we were working in there today.
It’s complex looking because the fans, light and a linear actuator to open / close the vents will all be controlled by an ESP32.
