"No EU Funds for the Eviction of Prosfygika"
Graffiti in Belgrade in support of the squatted community of Prosfygika in Athens which is under threat of eviction.The once abandoned buildings of Prosfygika were squatted in 2011 and the residents organized various initiatives including collective bakeries, collective kitchens, a children's shelter, a structure for self-education as well as health structures which provide for the needs of the residents and wider community.
So far, the community has managed to resist and defend its ground and its inhabitants four times over the last ten years, and is currently organizing to defend itself against what it describes as the fifth and largest state attack, which would result in the eviction and redevelopment of the neighbourhood.

HEALTH UPDATE REGARDING ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS – TRANSFER TO THE EVAGGELISMOS ICU
‚The health of Aristotelis Chantzis is in extremely critical condition. He is presenting multi-organ failure with cardiac damage, hepatic dysfunction, respiratory failure requiring high-flow oxygen administration, rhabdomyolysis, bone marrow suppression, and electrolyte disturbances within the context of prolonged starvation and in combination with severe refeeding syndrome.
At this moment, he is being transferred from the ICU of “G. Gennimatas” to the ICU of “Evaggelismos.”….‘

CRITICAL HEALTH CONDITION OF ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS
Statement from the hospital doctors monitoring his health, June 24, 2026
‚The hunger striker is hospitalized due to acute Wernicke’s encephalopathy with double vision and ataxic gait, and is also experiencing severe electrolyte imbalances that predispose him to life-threatening arrhythmias.
His condition remains extremely critical, with very severe, persistent hypoglycemic episodes, and, due to swallowing difficulties resulting from muscle weakness, he has developed aspiration into the respiratory tract and hypoxemia.
The generalized, severe muscle weakness has also affected the respiratory muscles and the muscles of the face and eyes.
He is being administered inhaled bronchodilators and oxygen via a nasal cannula.
His condition is extremely serious and steadily worsening, and the ongoing complications make it life-threatening.
Failure to meet these demands is equivalent to a death sentence.

Νοσηλεύεται στην Β'Παθολογική Κλινική του νοσοκομείου "Γ.Γεννηματάς" και παρακολουθείται από την ομάδα του Κ.Μούργου, Διευθυντή Παθολογίας, οι γιατροί της οποίας δείξανε αμέριστη στήριξη και φροντίδα στον Απεργό Πείνας Αριστοτέλη Χαντζή με σεβασμό στην απεργία πείνας ως μέσο αγώνα.
Να ικανοποιηθούν άμεσα τα αιτήματα των απεργών πείνας, Αριστοτέλη Χαντζή & Suzon Doppagne.

Seguimos siendo creativos y valientes, expresando nuestra solidaridad mediante huelgas de hambre temporales, concentraciones y acciones frente a las embajadas y consulados

Contra o desalojo da maior e mais antiga okupação da Europa
O Estado grego está travando uma guerra contra os espaços auto-organizados. Há anos, vem reprimindo as comunidades de ocupantes e anarquistas em Exarchia. Agora, querem desocupar o maior prédio ocupado da Europa, o Oi Prosfygika, ou “O Prédio dos Refugiados”.
O Prosfygika não é apenas um prédio, mas uma alternativa viva ao Estado, ao mercado e ao isolamento social. Sua história começa na década de 1930, quando oito blocos de apartamentos na Avenida Alexandras foram construídos para abrigar refugiadys de territórios ocupados pela atual Turquia. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Prosfygika foi um centro de resistência. A guerrilha lutou ali contra a burguesia grega e o imperialismo britânico. A história dessas batalhas pode ser lida nos buracos de bala e nas marcas de granadas marcadas nas fachadas dos prédios.
No final da década de 1990, havia planos para demolir os prédios e substituí-los por um shopping center. Moradores foram pressionadys com desapropriações, e muitas pessoas perderam suas casas por nada de dinheiro. Algumas pessoas se recusaram a sair e, em vez disso, tornaram-se ocupantes em seus próprios apartamentos.
A atual comunidade de ocupantes tomou forma em 2010, em meio à crise financeira grega. Nascida de assembleias públicas, Prosfygika tornou-se um espaço social, político e cultural, onde a vida cotidiana era administrada, não por autoridades ou proprietários, mas pela própria comunidade. Hoje, cerca de 400 pessoas vivem lá, em 228 apartamentos. Muitas moradoras são imigrantes. Algumas pessoas pagam aluguel, outras vivem como ocupantes individuais e cerca de 200 pertencem à ocupação organizada.
Prosfygika também abriga 22 iniciativas auto-organizadas, incluindo uma padaria, uma creche, um centro social e programas de saúde e nutrição. A comunidade oferece aulas de idiomas para adultos, acolhe coletivos culturais e artísticos, administra uma organização de mulheres e fornece alojamento para pacientes com câncer e seus familiares, em parceria com o Hospital vizinho, Agios Savvas.
Muitas das pessoas que moram em Prosfygika se inspiram no Confederalismo Democrático de Abdullah Öcalan, pela ideia de que a unidade pode ser alcançada sem sacrificar a diversidade.
Nesse modelo, diferentes identidades, grupos sociais e perspectivas políticas se expressam e tomam decisões por meio de conselhos, reuniões locais e assembleias. As comunidades se organizam por meio de unidades descentralizadas e autônomas, em vez de de estados-nação centralizados. Para Prosfygika, isso não é uma teoria abstrata, mas uma realidade vivida.
A mensagem é clara: não é o Estado que deve “salvar” Prosfygika, pois o próprio Estado é uma das forças que buscam destruí-la.
Por causa disso, o Estado grego lançou múltiplos ataques contra a comunidade — em 2016, 2019, 2022 e 2024.
A ameaça é particularmente grave desta vez, porque em junho de 2025 o Governo Regional da Ática aprovou um contrato para uma suposta “renovação”, que na prática equivale a um despejo.
Como era de se esperar, isso está sendo vendido como revitalização da comunidade. “Regeneração”, neste caso, não significa proteger o bairro, mas destruí-lo. O governo pretende que a comunidade desapareça, para que seus edifícios históricos e sua localização central possam ser explorados com fins lucrativos.
A campanha #SaveProsfygika foi lançada para defender a comunidade ocupada de Prosfygika e sua memória coletiva. A campanha tem como objetivo ampliar o alcance social do projeto e estabelecer conexões mais amplas, tanto nacionais quanto internacionais. A comunidade não permitirá que sua história e sua função social sejam saqueadas sob o pretexto da gentrificação.
No dia 9 de maio vamos estar com es companheires da Okupa Prosfygika, pra nos situarmos da situação e buscar formas de visibilizar e apoiar esse movimento.
Vídeos históricos da Okupação serão passados, e debateremos o contexto atual, que em várias partes do mundo se dá de forma muito similar, a gentrificação, o capitalismo, o suposto desenvolvimento vem para desalojar espaços libertários e propostas alternativas ao Estado, querendo nos vender um sistema que na verdade sempre esteve em colapso e depende do colapso.
A solidariedade é nossa maior arma, e é necessário construir estratégias para lidar com o que está posto e o que está por vir.

Day 53 of Hungerstrike until Death
Call for actions in solidarity with Prosfygika on the 5th of April for the internationalist defense of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika
In June 2025 the Regional Government of Attica (which Athens belongs to) approved a programmatic contract for the "renovation" and the evacuation of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, where more than 400 people live. 53 days ago, on February 5th, our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis started a hunger strike until death for the defense of the Community, for the defense of life. Soon in the next weeks, a second comrade will follow and start a hunger strike. Several weeks of actions in Athens and internationally have passed. The opening of the Community to the broader society, in Greece and internationally, is to build toward its social self-defense. This opening includes a full events program, a weekly open assembly, guest houses for cancer patients of the nearby Agios Savas hospital, and construction works to renovate houses, create more hospital guest housing, and the construction of the civil war museum. Hundreds of internationalists, solidarians and locals answered the call to come to the community and support the work for its defense.
On March 14th, thousands of people took in Athens the street for the defense of Prosfygika. Solidarity actions also took place in Poland, Serbia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Colombia.
Although large parts of the movement and the society have been mobilized, the Greek state and the regional government of Attica remain silent and haven’t canceled their ongoing plan. This puts the life of our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis in danger, together with the lives of so many members of the Community who will face extreme life-threatening conditions without the support of the Community and its 22 self-organized social structures.
We call all people who are for the defense of life to initiate or participate in solidarity actions to promote the panhellenic and international actions on the 5th of April in solidarity with the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.
We call for :
1. Participation in the circular 1-3 days of hungerstrike from now on.
2. Mobilizations in solidarity for the big demonstration on the 5th of April in Athens and internationally.
3. Press and media to come to Athens, to be there on this day with our comrades.
4. Supporting or building solidarity networks with anyone who is willing to contribute to the campaign #Saveprosfygika

The attack on the Community of Squatted Prosfygika is not an isolated fight. The community resists as one of the last remaining projects of social struggle that builds a proposal against regimes globally shifting to the far right, militarized societies and colonial mindsets. We ask for all comrades who are expressing their solidarity to connect the struggle also to their social, geographical and political context.
This is the 5th major attack of the state against the Community during the last decades. Although this attack appears to be the most serious of all, they will still fail.
