Now it seems a new age of imperialism is upon us. This time the great powers vying for influence in the region are Russia and the UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, and China. European influence has stagnated, trapped in mothballed colonial tropes. The new players are happy to stoke the war machine regardless of the human consequences, so long as it gives them what they need.
