I'm reminded of two things: what a great value this was (although the days when I could get this 375ml for $18 are, alas, gone); and how much more interesting mature Sauternes is.More focused, and more easily absorbing wood,this is tight and a little tense, with big flavor on the finish. Nowhere close to dying, of course.

Newer years are about $55 per half if you're wondering. This year might be available for not much more at auction, but backfilling is always risky.

Whine or wine? Last night, picked wine. An odd duo for the main event, the Thalassitis 2015 Assyrtiko, with synthetic cork, was super. So youthful, so fresh, restrained and elegant. The Pegau 1998 Reservée opened slowly, but blossomed into pure deliciousness. A little rough around the edges, it could use drinking, but it was no slouch. And a sweet conclusion posted on recently. The thrilling conclusion!

Open the bottle. With the damage, it didn't seem much like Sauternes any more. But the oxidized overlay didn't hurt it much. It was wonderful. As someone said at the time, "You cannot kill this wine." It is basically immortal.

Look at that baked-on gunk on the bottom. I mean, somebody must've stored this over a heater.

Sauternes' vineyard is shrinking and moving away from Sémillon. In 2021, the municipality of Sauternes (#Bordeaux) had 364 ha of vineyards, planted with three varieties: Sémillon Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadel. Compared to 2017, #Sauternes lost 43 ha (10.6%) - almost all of it was Sémillon (-40 ha). #viticulture #wine
