  1. "All good ships have appropriate names. Our ship was christened Diplodocus, with a picture of the beast painted on the side for our talisman - also as a lure for dinosaurs under the ground."

So wrote Barnum Brown in 1935, opening an article about using an airplane to survey the western USA for fossils.

I have mixed feelings about these old articles from the history of paleontology, but here it is:

I could find the will write
    about Abydosaurus
    how it lived its life
the tall trees it stripped bare
    and how it died
    buried in rock
    for a hundred million years
while the green river carved a canyon near
    but all the million forams?
    that I can't bear
    and each annoying conodont?
    no
    I won't

  3. sauropod factoid: among english letters, U and W are tied for the fewest sauropods beginning with the letter: only Uberabatitan and Udelartitan begin with U (sadly I must set aside both Ultrasaurus and Ultrasauros), and only Wintonotitan and Wamweracaudia begin with W. Xenoposeidon, Xingjangtitan, and Xianshanosaurus begin with X, and all other english letters have at least 4 genera. A sauropod themed alphabet book would have plenty of choices.

A better look at the Nottingham Natural History Museum's 3D-printed skull of Dippy the Diplodocus.

The #NottNatHit museum was one several museums to receive a replica skull like this as part of the 'Real World Science' network. More about that here: nhm.ac.uk/about-us/national-im

Note how, in addition to the bone, the replica includes the metal armature at the back of the skull.
