as a child I loved this #movie as a comedy. the lively humour is extremely well delivered by every actor.
as an adult I feel the pain and fear shown on the faces of the farmer, the mining labour and the teacher. I can appreciate the political satire that it is.
watching it today was almost like #SatyajitRay talking to the current population of #India, before the #LokSabhaElections2024, through this 1980 movie. he is telling us to be extremely careful of the ruler who is willing to #brainwash the public using targeted #misinformation.

I was thinking about the present conditions of #India when I suddenly thought of revisiting this #movie by #SatyajitRay. "Hirak Rajar Deshe" (In the Land of the Diamond-King). Its portrayal of moving to dictatorial rule is dangerously accurate.
I really wanted to share this #song from the #film. It is in #bengali so I shall provide a translation.I see such funny things in the world.
The full movie has decent subtitles. I would really encourage watching it.

Had a great time on Saturday evening at the "Remembering Ray" event by Katha Khoj. Six lovely stories by the brilliant #SatyajitRay, told by six talented storytellers from #Pune. Not a dull moment.

Tonight we're watching the #CriterionCollection edition of #SatyajitRay's 1956 film Aparajito (The Unvanquished) which is the second in his Apu Trilogy following the life and times of Apu Roy in the 1920's and 1930's.
In this film, Apu's family has moved from the small rural village to the holy city of Varanasi where his father earns a living as a sort of priestly busker on the steps of the Ganges.
We follow Apu's life through adolescence and college.

আমরা যারা সত্তর আশির দশকে বড় হয়েছি, আমরা যে ফেলুদাকে চিনতাম, আর যে জটায়ুকে চিনি, সেটা কিছুটা আমাদের কল্পনায়, কিছুটা স্বয়ং সত্যজিতের মানে স্রস্টার নিজের চোখের মনের বিচারে। সেখানে সৌমিত্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের ফেলুদা চিত্রায়নের একটা সমকালীন দার্শনিক তাৎপর্য রয়েছে, ষাটের দশকের বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত বাঙালীর চিত্রায়ণ । এই ব্যাপারটা পরবর্তী কালে আর কেউই তুলে আনতে পারেননি। একই রকম ভাবে জটায়ুর চিত্রায়ণ সন্তোষ দত্তের। ব্যাপারটা ঠিক সন্তোষ দত্তের মতন দেখতে হবার ব্যাপার নয়, এমনকি ম্যানারিজমেরও নয়। এক বিশেষ রকমের বাঙালী, যাঁরা আজকাল অবলুপ্ত প্রজাতি মাত্র।
ফেলুদার প্যাসটিচ হতে পারে, তবে সত্যজিতের গল্প নিয়ে সিনেমা না হওয়াই মনে হয় ভাল। যে মানুষ মনে থাকেন তাকে মনে রেখে দেওয়াই বোধহয় ভাল।
