  1. Whew! Okay, I'm super late but I suspect that in the end I will decide having been late will be worth it.

I am taking my shiny metal keister into overdrive and working on the factory I've been building in the Plains in Satisfactory. It makes heavy modular frames, and engines. At incredibly low volumes.

All will be worthwhile in due time.

  2. Alright, I know I've been gaming a lot more than I promised, but it's just one of those things. We'll be back to lab streams soon, I promise.

On the gripping actuator, my gain is your gain. Join me for some Satisfactory shennanigans as I continue the decorating and wiring-up of the main manufacturing segment of our shiny new factory in the plains.

  3. Alright, I've been teasing it all day, but here we are.

I have returned to MASSAGE-2(A-B)b and I have a single, terrible purpose. I shall taking a wrecking ball to, then hopefully rebuild, the earliest surviving factory still on the map.

Why, that'd be just plain... Satisfactory.

  4. Why am I doing this to myself?

  5. Yesterday, Child.* came home from their trip to Minnesota. They immediately scattered to their respective rooms.

On Satisfactory, we switched from modular buildings for the ingots and I made extendable lines of ingot factor above the desert. We are using the Modular Main Bus (MMB), I could have fun just making things that make things instead of fighting with endless belts and pipes.

Also, MMB is probably the main reason we didn't give up at oil power like we did the last seven times. Usually we stop once Child.0 has picked up every Mercer sphere, hard drive, and Sommerslop because they love hunting things. I like Build and Chill, mainly because while Satisfactory is a fun building game, it isn't that fun for exploring for me; there aren't really secrets, just Where's Waldo hunting.

On Palworld, Child.0 moved bases and "gifted" me their old base with 18k ore behind. Even though we both started at the same time in the home instance, they are level forty-something and I'm running at a reasonable thirteen. :D So I have a lot of pals that are level forty-something downgraded to my level. Yet they won't give me a tortise.

But there is something fun about "want to kill a boss with me?" and they go in with a machine gun and blowing everything away while I'm running around with a bow and managed to get two shots while screaming "I'm helpful!" :D

Palworld is another game where I don't really enjoy exploring much. It has places to go, but there aren't secrets. No puzzles to really solve or places that feel special, just pretty places to visit and things that want to kill you.

Now, the really big problem is that Q is build in Satisfactory and throw sphere in Palworld, so I spent a lot of time chucking my precious spheres out because of muscle memory. :D

  6. On Satisfactory, we've decided to do most of our building around "Modular Load Balancers" and "Modular Main Bus" mods. They are slightly cheaty (Modular Main Bus lets us avoid the head height issue which is something neither of us enjoy in the slightest) but mostly it is to make cleaner-looking buildings that are easier to manage.

We also came up with a nice way of doing modular buildings that allows us to have signs. If you build walls at the blueprint's limits (4 or 5 tiles wide), the blueprint won't let you have a sign. So we use small pillars at the corners, then use nudge to move the walls back one meter. That gives us just a tiny gap for having outside decorations (a sign to let us know what the building is for, arrows on the side to show where the front is, through the wall electrical connectors). Overall, it's our best approach.

If "Circuitry - Logic gates and More" didn't have blueprint bugs with the Linux dedicated server, I would have integrated that because it is really fun to wire it up so pressing a button on the front of the building automatically sets up recipes, filters for the modular load balancer, and everything else without having to go inside. I really like it when games give me that level of automation.

Between all that, we've actually gotten three elevator stages further than we've ever gotten before. We're up to building a nuclear reactor and its pretty cool. Sadly, the later tiers are turning into the "arrange massive production chains to build a single object" which is where most factory games start to be "not fun" for us.

Hence, Child.0 being lured over to Palworld.

  7. Had a relatively busy weekend despite sleeping woes (kids kept me up until 05:40 Sunday morning because they were lonely/anxious).

    • Went to Home Depot and got most of the BOM for the bench project with Child.0
    • Set up a Palworld instance on the NixOS home lab (only a half hour) so Child.0 and I could play whenever.
    • Built up a "tech stack" in Satisfactory to make crystal oscillators, computers, circuits, and connectors.
    • Worked on feedback from Allegro, worked my way through the stinging feedback, and have a better path going forward. Just takes a little time to process because I knew they were right, just frustrating because I keep hoping I'm done and just need mild tweaks. Ultimately, I think the problem came down to the main character was misinterpreting someone's actions, but since I write unreliable narrators, they don't know they are reading it wrong. But its one of those "if the room says you are wrong, fix it" and I think I can make it a little more clear. The "I would DNF your book here" point is going to hurt but I decided that was opinion.
    • Almost finished watching Cash Hero, down to two episodes. The persuasive worrying about money that runs through a lot of Korean shows I see on Netflix makes this show uncomfortable, but I like the quirky characters and want to see the various villains get their comeuppance.
    • More episodes of Person of Interest with Partner. We've gotten to the point where Root is clearly going to be a main character and Partner is losing interest because they really hate "I'm evil" characters and knowing she's in 60+ episodes and she has some torturing others scenes is leading toward us dropping the show. Hopefully, that will change or we drop the show, they don't like unrelentingly evil characters who aren't personable (William from Haven is our gold standard for villains).
    • Came up with yet another idea for book covers for Allegro and Flight of the Scions. Might try to carve out some time.

This week, the kids are going on a trip with Grandma and a cousin, so we are going to be childless for five days. That is going to be a busy week since I'm kind of 50-50 if I should do a coding iteration or a writing iteration (for obligations).

  8. Last night, Child.0 and I messed around with Satisfactory. We got the new Blueprint mk2 up and decided to create a 5x5 version of our modular buildings. They also wanted the Circuitry mod, so we had a grand time figuring out how wire it up so you set the recipe on one constructor and it automatically programs the other five in the building, updates the sign on the outside with the inputs and outputs and lists the MW cost for the building.

The blueprint is getting a bit expensive now and there might be some minor debugging going on, but it was cool to see that part working.

Sadly, something (probably the new mod) isn't stable and the server crashed a few times.

  9. Child.0 was feeling down tonight so we made some silly blueprints in Satisfactory.

First was a 1x1x4 hypertube entrance that chained five entrances together.

Second was a 1x1x4 inline accelerator that chained ten entrances for bi-directional acceleration.

  10. Nothing to see here, just exploiting alien planet for its natural resources and saving the Earth and kittens.

I'm still somewhat in the middle of the game. Usual players would probably already be done with the game, I just can't get myself to fall for the calling of spaghetti megafactories and am instead building stuff for stuff like I would do in Sims or something. And I'm not even using any helper tools to plan the factories, just the codex, pen and paper and occasional calculator.

  11. I'm currently not in a good place mentally and what helps surprisingly well is building brutalist cubes at two AM.

  12. did some touching up to the aesthetics of my "small" concrete factory

it's technically still just a couple of grey boxes with windows, but concrete pillars and beams are an easy way to add some depth

(didn't originally plan on doing before/after screenshots, hence the poor lighting in the first image)

  13. resumed the Satisfactory playthrough today. finally started building up a road network

...emphasis on "started". i've spent more than half the time today in the blueprint designer designing the road sections, and have so far only actually built a small road that doesn't yet connect from my main base/hub to any satellite factories

pretty happy with how its turning out, though

  14. I started playing Satisfactory a few days ago and I am ... Satisfied!

So far it seems like a perfect game for me. Slow enough for my limited action game skills and an almost infinite potential for geekiness.
