Hilfegesuch: Suche 30+ cm SATA 6GB/s Kabel mit gewinkeltem Stecker auf einer Seite. Kabelweggang nach oben. Gekauft habe ich diese von Delock:

Die haben aber einen etwa 2-3mm zu tiefen/langen/breiten Stecker (siehe Foto). Stehen also über, sodass das PC-Gehäuse nicht geschlossen werden kann.
Konkret geht es um eine gebraucht gekaufte P510 Workstation von Lenovo. Lenovo selbst ruft für alleine ein Kabel indiskutable 50€+ auf.

Silly thought, I wonder how hard it is for a fast MCU or FPGA to emulate a SATA III disk interface?
If you could make a mSATA or M.2 SATA module (which are getting rare and expensive) which took a stack of lower-density MMC cards or eMMC chips and put them in a RAID-5 style arrangement… you could re-use existing flash media stock, possibly even replace faulty parts as they wear out.

This is the server: it's an old #lenovo #thinkcentre with a 6th gen #Corei5 . It only supports #sata disks and it's pretty loaded atm. With the current #chipshortage and the prices spike, it doesn't make sense to buy sata ssds, so I decided for an upgrade. (Continues...) -
Поменял в сервере китайский PCE8SAT-M01 на Broadcom 9600-24i.
Теперь один контроллер обслуживает весь бэкплейн и вся морда сервера функциональна.
Пока это делал - всё пошло не по плану. И PiKVM сломался при недавнем обновлении и перестал стримить картинку, и я забыл, что не включил в ядре модуль
mpi3mr.Потратил несколько часов на расследование несуществующей проблемы.
Но в итоге разобрался: сервер загружен, рейды поднялись.
Как будто теперь сервер менее кустарный.

Sometimes my #hacking #bricks things. I bricked this #SATA-RAID box a while back with a bad #flash and finally decided to attack the #EEPROM directly with this cheap little programmer kit. Alas - I #unbricked it!
This is full of 4x 1TB #Velociraptor HDDs. I originally built it to mess around with Chia plotting. Heh, another waste of time that was but I have fun regardless.
I might install Windows on it via VMWare or something for shitz and gigglez

Discovery of the day is that version 3.3 of the SATA spec has repurposed a pin in the #SATA power connector as a reset line. Which is implemented on newer #Ultrastar drives. Older PSUs which put 3.3v on said pin effectively put the drive in a constant reset state and it won't spin up. I now need to sheepishly go and re-buy the drive I just returned to #CEX, I fear.

On a dessoudé un BIOS de laptop HS donné par l'hôpital de la ville d'à côté, reprogrammé cette EEPROM, ressoudé la chose et redémarré la machine ! Pas si compliquée cette réparation 🙂
Pour remettre un système d'exploitation sur la machine on a utilisé un nouveau gadget : un stockage NVME dans un adaptateur USB.
En choisissant le bon port USB, la machine démarre plus vite en live que depuis son SSD SATA interne une fois l'installation terminée !! (en un temps record)Les temps changent…

Its alive!!!
My 2TB portable #HDD that died earlier this week has now been repaired (by myself 😃 ).
The internal #SATA to #USB3 interface went ping.
I got a new, not like for like, replacement and with the help of a hacksaw, some snips and electrical tape it had been brought back to life.
The new SATA interface is a generic one that should work with any 2.5 internal HDD so I needed to cut a bit off the original portable HHD case.
Nice fix which only cost me £3.99 GBP and 15 minutes of my time. -

Still looking into building a #computer in the next few months, though I'm waiting for situations to change a little before I commit to anything.
Looking at various #motherboard options, specifically those with a 120 Watt #AMD #AM5 #CPU Socket so I have a good upgrade path. Right now I've gotten it down to a few, but I notice that some of these have multiple #M.2 #SSD slots, and while I do plan to have one of them, I would like the option to have an #HDD, due to the cost-to-storage ratio.
So I'm wondering, is there a way to put a #SATA drive in an #M2 slot? I'm sure someone has made some sort of adapter...

Недавно на Хабре публиковался перевод статьи «Просто выберите Postgres» ( оригинал , англ. яз) с аргументами, что Postgres — оптимальная БД для десктопных и мобильных приложений. Аналогичное мнение высказывают в других популярных статьях вроде «До свидания MongoDB, здравствуй PostgreSQL» . Главным недостатком SQLite называют то, что данные хранятся в одном файле, а MongoDB (а также DynamoDB и Cassandra) — низкую производительность: «Всё это связано с тем, что подобные базы данных, по сути, представляют собой огромную распределённую хеш-таблицу. Единственные операции, работающие без необходимости сканирования всей базы данных — это поиск по секционному ключу и сканы, при которых используется ключ сортировки. …Если паттерны доступа существенно изменятся, то может потребоваться полная повторная обработка всех данных». Более производительные резидентные БД хранят данные в памяти (Redis, Valkey), но их использование ограничено объёмом ОЗУ. После такого заявления интересно посмотреть на независимые тесты производительности разных СУБД.

I like to go where angles fear to dread. It is a hard job but no one has to do it ... Unless the AI #Borg have taken over. Maybe they did whilst I was waking/moulting.
I am glad my #desktop was ready-built, I would have gone #madder building it. The agony was hard enough getting an OS working. Anyway ... I have some leads on potential server software and MAY (heaven help me) try setting up hosted server space in the UK (pronounced yuck without the why). I tried this once, and ran hosted Tooting website in the past.
As a wer-lobster I am cack handed, which used to be illegal and is now part of #obscure lingustic wrong speech. So I am #wondering why I would want to open a server to see if I can connect a DVD drive? Have a feeling the server only accepts #SATA drives ... and hard drives at that ...
I was just booting into #Puppy #Linux. An Olde version and also the latest #community edition to turn a #USB #wifi #connection on (I am using the #ethernet connection for the #Ryzen3 server and this tiny USB connector was so cute). 🫠 That looks like a major felafal.

Is it normal for IDE to USB adapters to fail to start due to lack of power from the USB even when the IDE DVD drive has already it's own power source?
This same adapter works with SATA Hard Disk Drives (also externally powered).
