Według ustaleń brytyjskiego dziennika The Guardian, Sarah Wynn-Williams, była dyrektorka w Facebooku i autorka demaskatorskiej książki „Careless People”, stoi w obliczu ruiny finansowej z powodu działań prawnych podjętych przez jej byłego pracodawcę.

Sprawa, którą w parlamencie nagłośniła posłanka Louise Haigh, pokazuje, jak potężne korporacje mogą próbować uciszać sygnalistów, grożąc im gigantycznymi karami finansowymi.

Meta prezentuje nowe inteligentne okulary. Mają AI, ale premiera nie obyła się bez wpadki

Jak donosi The Guardian, sednem problemu jest umowa o rozstaniu, którą Wynn-Williams podpisała, odchodząc z firmy w 2017 roku. Zawierała ona klauzulę o niekrytykowaniu firmy. Po publikacji jej książki, w której oskarżyła firmę m.in. o współpracę z chińskim rządem przy tworzeniu narzędzi cenzury i ignorowanie problemów bezpieczeństwa nastolatków, Meta uzyskała przeciwko niej nakaz sądowy. Zgodnie z informacjami przedstawionymi w brytyjskim parlamencie, za każde złamanie tego zakazu – na przykład poprzez publiczną krytykę firmy – Wynn-Williams grozi kara w wysokości 50 000 dolarów.

„Ona jest na skraju bankructwa” – alarmowała posłanka Louise Haigh, cytowana przez The Guardian. „Meta próbuje ją uciszyć i ukarać za to, że odważyła się mówić”. Mimo że książka „Careless People” okazała się bestsellerem, sprzedając się w ponad 150 000 egzemplarzy, a autorka otrzymała za nią ponad 500 000 dolarów zaliczki, presja prawna ze strony Mety ma spychać ją w finansową otchłań.

Byli pracownicy oskarżają Meta. Firma miała tuszować zagrożenia dla dzieci w VR

Dziennikarze Guardiana rzetelnie przedstawiają również stanowisko Mety. Koncern zaprzecza wszystkim oskarżeniom, nazywając książkę „mieszanką nieaktualnych i fałszywych zarzutów”. Firma podkreśla, że Wynn-Williams została zwolniona za „słabe wyniki i toksyczne zachowanie” i że dobrowolnie podpisała umowę zawierającą klauzulę o niekrytykowaniu. Do tej pory, jak twierdzi Meta, nie została zmuszona do zapłacenia żadnej kary.

Sprawa opisana przez The Guardian jest symbolicznym przykładem walki sygnalistów z potęgą Big Techu. Mimo wezwań ze strony amerykańskiego Senatu, by Meta wycofała swoje działania, prawnik autorki potwierdza, że „pozostaje ona uciszona w sprawach, które bada Kongres, podczas gdy grozi jej bankructwo”.

#CarelessPeople by #SarahWynnWilliams is just amazingly written. It's very obvious why #Meta wants the book gone. It's a very detailed and clear progression in mindset from the people involved and the methods they used to control the narrative and spin things in their favour. Some of the statements made would be insane if I didn't know people who actually act like that... Well worth a read.
