South Australia's lower house has voted down Family First MP Sarah Game's bill to restrict late-term abortion, defeating it 36 votes to 9 after less than two hours of debate.
Hours earlier the bill had cleared the upper house 10-9 — the furthest an anti-abortion bill has progressed in the state's parliament, after defeats in 2024 and 2025 — carried by three newly-elected One Nation MPs.
The bill would have banned abortion from 25 weeks except to save the mother's life or for serious foetal abnormalities, the latter added by a Labor amendment; it would have removed the existing exemption allowing later terminations where there is significant risk to the woman's physical or mental health.
The vote was a conscience vote for Labor and Liberal MPs. Premier Peter Malinauskas and Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn both backed it without speaking; the Greens opposed it, One Nation supported it.
Health Minister Blair Boyer said existing law was "fit for purpose" and treated abortion as healthcare. The push was backed by an alliance including the Australian Christian Lobby and anti-abortion campaigner Joanna Howe, who rallied outside Parliament.
With the bill defeated, South Australian law is unchanged.

Radio news had the story of the utimate splitter. (No text source yet.) Sarah Game was elected to the SA parliament in 2022 for One Nation (*spit*), then quit ON to form her own party "Sarah Game - Fair Go for Australians", and apparently she's now quit her own party to join Family First (*spit*). Maybe she couldn't stand her leadership style. Maybe she's just another pointless fascist with a bloated ego. Or maybe ON wouldn't have her back? The levels of inter-fash bitching must be startling.

The ABC is reporting that only one seat is still in doubt after the state election. I'm guessing that postal votes haven't been finalised yet, but the two-candidate-preferred (2CP) count shows One Neuron with a 25 vote lead over Liberal, so I find myself hoping for a Lib win and now I feel dirty.

Further electoral nerdery follows.
Given the tendency of the right wing to denigrate preferential voting, I had a look to see if the state election would have produced a different outcome under the primitive FPTP "system." In short - no, it wouldn't have changed the overall result, though both Labor and the Liberals would each have snatched an extra seat from an Independent.
In each of the four seats where One Neuron is leading the count now, they would also have won under FPTP with between 27% and 36% of the vote.
Labor would have won 35 seats rather than 34, but it's worth noting that they've picked up five seats with more than 50% of the primary vote so preferences in those cases are of academic interest.
The Libs would have picked up six seats instead of five. Big deal.
Anyway. Now that I've worked this out, I can (in theory) stop thinking about all of this.
Preferential voting is A Good Thing. But we knew that already.

The ABC is reporting that the Libs will retain official Opposition status in the South Australian Parliament with five (5) seats in the lower house. First, that's a relief, it won't be One Neuron with up to four (4) seats. Second, it's weird that this is news. That's how odd things have become.

A random thought about the South Australian election system. We have a redistribution after every single election to ensure fairness to both sides of politics at the next election. (There was a fair bit of sookage before this reform was introduced.) Well, how the hell will that work now? One for the state Electoral Commission to ponder. Sucks to be them.

Remembering the 2007 federal election. Days after the ALP win, a gaggle of dopey old women were protesting in Melbourne because Labor hadn't boosted their pensions or something. Labor hadn't even been sworn in yet, let alone drafted any legislation on any subject and put it to parliament.
There's a fair old chunk of the electorate with this level of understanding of things. A lot of them will vote for One Neuron and then get upset that nothing much changes as a result. They're also likely to struggle with the separation between state and federal issues, among other basic concepts.

Another batch of election material in the letterbox, including one from Labor listing the five Libs who were charged with, or found guilty of, criminal offences during the term of the last state Parliament. If that doesn't spike any nonsense about the Libs being all about law and order, I don't know what will.

But I do feel sorry for people who used to make up mud to fling at their political opponents. It's all just factual now. Another traditional craft under threat. #saparli #auspol
