México y los Mundiales: historia de pasión y orgullo

Hablar de la Selección Mexicana en las Copas del Mundo es hablar de una de las historias más extensas y apasionantes del futbol internacional. Pocas selecciones pueden presumir una tradición mundialista tan arraigada como la del Tricolor, que en 2026 disputa su décimo octavo Mundial y abrirá nuevamente una Copa del Mundo ante su afición.

La historia comenzó en Uruguay 1930, el primer Mundial organizado por la FIFA. México fue una de las 13 selecciones participantes y tuvo el honor de disputar uno de los encuentros inaugurales del torneo frente a Francia. Aunque el equipo perdió sus tres partidos de la fase de grupos, quedó para la historia el nombre de Juan Carreño, autor del primer gol mexicano en una Copa del Mundo.

Desde entonces, el futbol mexicano ha vivido momentos de crecimiento, frustraciones y grandes gestas. Entre los pioneros destacan futbolistas como Horacio Casarín, Antonio Carbajal —el legendario «Cinco Copas», primer jugador en disputar cinco Mundiales—, así como figuras históricas como Enrique Borja, Hugo Sánchez, Jorge Campos, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Rafael Márquez, Jared Borgetti, Luis Hernández y Javier «Chicharito» Hernández. Estos dos últimos comparten el récord de más goles mexicanos en Copas del Mundo, con cuatro anotaciones cada uno.

México ha tenido entrenadores fundamentales en su historia mundialista. Nombres como Ignacio Trelles, Raúl Cárdenas, Bora Milutinović, Manuel Lapuente, Javier Aguirre, Ricardo La Volpe, Miguel Herrera y Juan Carlos Osorio forman parte de distintas generaciones que llevaron al Tricolor a competir en la máxima justa internacional.

Los mejores resultados de México llegaron precisamente cuando fue anfitrión. En 1970, bajo la dirección de Raúl Cárdenas y con figuras como Javier Valdivia, Enrique Borja y Gustavo Peña, alcanzó por primera vez los cuartos de final. Dieciséis años después, en México 1986, el equipo dirigido por Bora Milutinović igualó esa actuación con jugadores como Hugo Sánchez, Manuel Negrete, Fernando Quirarte y Tomás Boy. Hasta hoy, esos cuartos de final representan la mejor actuación mexicana en una Copa del Mundo.

No toda la historia ha sido positiva. México estuvo ausente del Mundial de Italia 1990 debido a una sanción de la FIFA derivada del llamado caso de los «Cachirules», uno de los episodios más dolorosos del futbol nacional. Aquella suspensión privó al país de participar en una generación que prometía competir a gran nivel.

También existen momentos imborrables por la afición: la victoria sobre Bélgica en México 1986; el gol de Manuel Negrete, considerado por muchos como uno de los mejores en la historia de los Mundiales; el empate ante Italia en Estados Unidos 1994; el triunfo frente a Croacia en Brasil 2014; la histórica victoria contra Alemania en Rusia 2018 gracias al gol de Hirving Lozano; y las siete clasificaciones consecutivas a octavos de final entre 1994 y 2018.

Y si existe un símbolo inseparable de esta historia, es ese el hoy denominado Estadio Ciudad de México, conocido mundialmente durante décadas como Estadio Azteca. Ningún otro inmueble puede presumir lo que este escenario conseguirá en 2026: convertirse en el primer estadio de la historia en albergar tres partidos de Copas del Mundo distintas. Ahí levantaron la Copa del Mundo Pelé en 1970 y Diego Armando Maradona en 1986. Además, es el estadio con más partidos mundialistas disputados en la historia del torneo.

Ahora, una nueva página está por escribirse. El próximo 11 de junio, México inaugurará el Mundial 2026 enfrentando a Sudáfrica ante más de 80 mil aficionados en el Estadio Ciudad de México. El equipo dirigido por Javier Aguirre llega respaldado por una generación encabezada por Edson Álvarez, Santiago Giménez, Raúl Jiménez, Luis Chávez y Julián Quiñones, con la ilusión de trascender por primera vez el famoso quinto partido.

La historia mundialista de México está llena de momentos memorables, pero también de cuentas pendientes. Y quizá por eso el Mundial de 2026 representa una oportunidad única. Porque pocas veces la selección tiene la posibilidad de escribir su capítulo más importante frente a su propia gente. El reto es enorme, pero también lo es la ilusión de un país que, desde 1930, nunca ha dejado de soñar con hacer historia en la Copa del Mundo.
