  4. I just saw the largest protest I’ve ever seen in Santa Clarita. For block after block along Valencia Blvd people were out on the streets protesting the Trump administration, Elon Musk, and Republican leaders who support them. Even the likes of Mike Garcia weren’t safe from scrutiny.

I’ve never seen so many people come together in protest of a single cause. Not even the pro-Trump drive-by last year was this big. There were so many people out today you couldn’t even see the sidewalk. Drivers were out honking in solidarity. Even bus drivers and the sheriff tooted their horns.

Based on what was written on those signs, it’s very obvious even conservatives where I live are livid with the Trump administration. It’s honestly heartwarming to see everyone come together like this in support of democratic values and against the absurdity of this administration’s actions.

My elderly passenger commented that it drew uncomfortable parallels to the civil rights protests he witnessed in the 1960s.

  5. New Fast-Spreading #Wildfire in #LosAngelesCounty Prompts Evacuations

Story by Ben Fritz, Victoria Albert, Alexa Corse, January 22, 2025

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — "A fast-spreading wildfire sparked in northern Los Angeles County, prompting renewed fears of death and destruction in a region already decimated by historic wildfires this month.

"The #Hughes fire, which broke out north of #SantaClarita in the Castaic, Calif., area earlier Wednesday, has scorched more than 9,400 acres and is 0% contained, officials said. Evacuation orders have been issued for some 31,000 people, and an additional 23,000 were told to prepare to evacuate.

"No lives have been lost or structures reported damaged in the blaze, which is being fought by some 4,000 firefighters.

"Castaic is a remote, unincorporated part of northern Los Angeles County with a lake that draws many visitors in the summer. It has a population of about 19,000, but is close to the city of #SantaClarita, home to about 224,000 people and the Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park.

"At a press conference Wednesday evening, local officials speaking in front of large plumes of gray smoke said winds weren’t as strong as during the infernos two weeks ago, allowing them to drop tens of thousands of gallons of retardant from the sky. In addition, firefighters from across the U.S. and overseas have surged to L.A. this month and were able to deploy quickly.

“The situation remains dynamic and the fire remains a difficult one to contain, although we are getting the upper hand,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Maroni."

  6. I forgot to share this yesterday but for those of you who live in the Santa Clarita Valley of Southern California, you’re on #Tataviam land. The unseeded territory of #Tobimonga of #Tataveaveat.

Riparian areas around what are now the town of Piru, the Six Flags Employee Parking Lot, Bridgeport, Old Saugus/Valencia Valley, and Vista Canyon were at one point a network of Tataviam villages.

Be kind to the syutka (coast live oak) that dot the countless hills and canyons this semi-arid land.

  7. Another perspective of the Santa Clara River, this time showing the northern bank near the river’s confluence with Arroyo San Francisquito. Note the fact all the trees in the river have been completely undercut by the rapids.

  8. It’s really coming down now ⛈️

The Santa Clara River, which runs dry most of the year, is churning out an unimaginable amount of silt-laden water right now. Just look at those rapids.

  9. A brief history of Rancho San Francisco 📖

Around 1800, Franciscan missionaries from Mission San Fernando Rey de Español ventured north into the Santa Clarita Valley in search of additional land suitable for agriculture and ranching to support the growing #mission. Subsequently, the missionaries brought some of the local #Tataviam with them to the mission where they were #baptized and #enslaved for free labour. (1/5)
