A Piacenza, dove sono nato, i regali li porta Santa Lucia. E mi pare ben giusto che la notte di Santa Lucia sia "la notte più lunga che ci sia": proprio per darle il tempo di portare i regali a tanti bambini...

Ad essere pignoli, però, la notte più lunga cade al solstizio d'inverno, che cade il 21/22 dicembre, non il 12/13. Diamo la licenza poetica a Santa Lucia? Ma certo! E poi fa anche rima... ☺️

Ma per amor di polemica, fatemi dire che ci potrebbe essere un'altra spiegazione. Anzi, due.

La prima pseudo-spiegazione (perché non ci sarebbe nulla da spiegare!) potrebbe essere il salto dal calendario Giuliano a quello Gregoriano. Fino al 1582, quindi, il giorno di Santa Lucia era più vicino al solstizio vero, quasi coincidente.

Un'altra spiegazione potrebbe essere che il 12/13 dicembre non è il giorno con la notte più lunga, ma bensì quello con il primo tramonto. Ebbene sì: le due cose non coincidono! Ho trovato un sito con tutti i numeri.

A voi, Santa Lucia, che vi ha portato? Avete lasciato il fieno, l'acqua, il latte e i biscotti sul terrazzo?

Why is the railroad station in Venice called Santa Lucia?

Venice is, of course, much older than the railroad station, and where the station is today, there was something else before. There was quite a bit, actually.

On the area, which is now occupied by the station, the square in front of the station, the railroad tracks behind it, and the office building besides it, were once two churches, two monasteries, an important charity and several large gardens.

The churches were the Chiesa di Corpus Domini and the Chiesa di Santa Lucia, each with an associated nunnery, and between them was the seat of the Scuola dei Nobili.

Thanks to the Venetians' love of vedute, we have some images of how the area looked, at least in the 1700s.

The largest of these buildings was the Church of Santa Lucia, which stood more or less in the middle of the square in front of the current station.
