Das Café San Marco existiert in Triest seit 1914 – hier kann man sowohl Kaffe und Kuchen genießen als auch Bücher kaufen.
Für mich gab's was Glutenfreies.
Dass heute Österreicher hier einen Hauch k.u.k. Kaffehauskultur spüren, ist durchaus ironisch: die Intellektuellen und Künstler, die sich hier zu Monarchiezeiten trafen, waren oftmals Anhänger des italienischen Nationalismus – und wollten dezidiert weg aus der Österreichischen Monarchie. Deshalb auch der Name – ist der heiligen Markus doch Schutzpatron des großen Rivalen Österreichs an der Adria: Venedig.
Die Einrichtung des Cafés ist tatsächlich weitgehend original erhalten. Nur der Buchhandlungsteil ist neu – früher standen dort Billardtische.

A gondolier rows his gondola with a bunch of red roses on the 25th of April. During Republican times, it was tradition that on April 25th (St Mark's holy day), a red rose blossom be offered to one's beloved as a token of love. The tradition allegedly started with Maria, daughter of the Doge Angelo Partecipazio, who fell in love with young Tancredi.

One thousand Venetians gathered today in Saint Mark's Square to form a giant rosebud of more than 1000 square meters to celebrate the Festa del Bocolo, when the Venetian males give a bocolo (a blooming red rose) to their women to show their love.
