  1. So, we're not crazy.

    Mrs Miasma and I would lie in bed giggling on mornings when we heard sandhill cranes calling.

    We knew no matter how fast we got up and dressed, we wouldn't see them. We never had and we'd tried many times... until today.

    Apologies - they were at the absolute limit of my iphone's focus range. (How do they know?)

    Still - cranes in Wyoming.
    <shakes head in wonder>

    Based on the apparent size, shape, and outstretched necks they might be #SandhillCranes.

    My best guess.

  3. it's an absolutely gorgeous day in the mid columbia basin so we've been outside hiking, birds everywhere, hoping to go see sandhill cranes as the migration is on. #birding #sandhillcranes

    Here are two endemic #SandhillCranes that nest in our area. They do not migrate with their northern kin and are slightly smaller. At one point I was about ten feed away from them. 🙂

    I had a nice experience with #sandhillCranes a few years ago. There were some standing on a path I was walking on, leading into the woods. One of them walked up to me, so I put my hand out in front of me. It squawked and gently nibbled my fingers. Only then did I realize it had flightless chicks with it. It just wanted to warn me off, so I turned and went another direction.

  9. A trend that started early eve continued thru to wee hours. Low altitude overflight by two #SandhillCranes. A short time later two baby Egrets rummaging about, followed by two frogs dueling on the sill ( dual croakers?) . Later things still hopping with two rabbits racing thru in the wee hours…and two cats wandering as if they couldn’t remember where they’d parked the car. It finally dawns on you. They must be loading the #Ark. Better check the weather

  10. "In a small pond in Madison, Wisconsin, a pair of sandhill cranes is raising a baby Canada goose as their own. The combination appears to be only the third confirmed instance of such a cross-species adoption—which was observed previously in Michigan in 2019, and again just last year in Madison."

  11. The Platte River stretches the length of #Nebraska from west to east. The North Platte area is in western Nebraska, while the Chapman to Overton stretch of the river is in south central Nebraska.
    Incredibly large numbers of #sandhillcranes stop along the #PlatteRiver at this time of year on their journey north. It is breathtaking to see so many of these magnificent #birds and hear their call.

  12. #SandhillCranes Are Moving to Cities and Adopting Urban Lifestyles. Once elusive inhabitants of remote wetlands, sandhill cranes can now be found thriving in yards, athletic fields, and college campuses sierraclub.org/sierra/sandhill #migratorybirds #nature #environment #climatecrisis #marshes #marshland #wetlands

  13. I enjoy going to Bosque del Apache, but I don't need to go beyond the backyard to take photos of cranes. The field behind the house seems to be a breakfast buffet.

  14. We went to see the winter birds in #SauvieIsland, most especially the #SandhillCranes. They are the largest species of crane in North America and their distinctive call is haunting. We also saw #BaldEagle, #HarrierHawk, #Kestrel, #SnowGoose, #CanadaGoose, #Coot, #ScrubJay, #RedwingBlackbird, #WesternMeadowlark, and a few others. What a gorgeous day!

    If you go, don't forget to buy a wildlife parking permit at the store next to the bridge.

  15. Capturing movement - guess how many sandhill cranes are there ? The twisting movement of the necks creates a sort of holographic effect for the heads and necks.
