Did you know Brandenburg is often nicknamed "Sandenburg"? This is because much of its soil is incredibly sandy. Just a few centimeters beneath the surface, you'll find endless stretches of bright sand.
This photo was taken on my lunch bike ride at the former gravel pit "Pätzer Kiesgrube" in Bestensee. Spanning approximately 30 hectares, this area was a major sand mining site for years. The sand was transported via narrow gauge trains to the nearby Hölzerner See, where it was loaded onto ships bound for construction sites in Berlin.
