Always reminds me of one of the scenes in the film adaptation of the BBC TV comedy series 'The Likely Lads'.
Aware that some reading this might be a bit too young to have been around when the series was aired on TV and never seen the film, the storyline generally follows the lives and friendship of two young working class men, Terry Collier (James Bolam) and Bob Ferris (Rodney Bewes).
In the movie adaptation, there is a scene filmed on the pier where Bob and Terry are chatting about the future direction of their lives.
Bob turns to Terry and memorably remarks: "In the chocolate box of life, the top layer's already gone."

Cycling on Jekyll Island, Georgia, with a Road Scholar group
April 29, 2026 The challenge we faced while riding around Jekyll Island was using a coaster bike. It was unexpected, and we have not used those bikes in decades. It took some time to reacquaint ourselves with getting on and off those bikes. Another challenge was cycling up the sand dunes with only one gear. We'd climbed up onto the dunes just as the weather turned. One minute it was postcard Fuerteventura. Bright sand, blue sea, the whole thing was beautiful and the next a slab of grey had slid in off the Atlantic and parked itself overhead. Suddenly we were running for our cars as rain pelted down. But that was 5 minutes into the future. For now people were enjoying the dunes in Fuerteventura. -
Sands can be amazingly beautiful. This is Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.

The topography of California has always fascinated me, specifically the deserts (mostly the Mojave) of the east. Originally, I believed the Eureka Valley wasn't part of Death Valley, but was pleasantly suprised to learn it's simply an isolated park of the park. (1/2)

Tracking Through The Sands
Around the US West there are seemingly random pockets of sand dunes. This set is close to the Nevada/California border and are a favorite for the ATV crowd. Calle the Big Dunes, they are maybe 300' all and on BLM land.

In Hamamatsu you can also find the Nakatajima Sand Dunes (around 20 minutes by bus from Hamamatsu Station). The perfect contrast to the JASDF airbase today: sand and waves, and no city noise.
