I caught this one on a warm Saturday night in Katowice a few years ago. Somewhere on the Mariacka strip where every other doorway is a bar and the pavement is essentially a parade route. I’ve photographed Sullivan’s Quay plenty of times but this was a little experiment shooting in highlight-priority mode. I brightened it up later but I like the way it came out and love the yellow reflected light on the River Lee.

Church Bay’s Cosmic Cathedral

The Milky Way as seen from just above Church Bay, at Weaver Point, in Co. Cork. This was last night, a few minutes after the moon had set. Unfortunately, the centre of the galaxy was hidden behind a bank of clouds at the horizon. The forecast said there would be about 30% cloud, but thankfully it mostly didn’t cover most of the galaxy.

The best time to see the centre of the Milky Way again from Ireland will be in March 2026. However, you’ll still be able to shoot the less bright celestial arms once the moon has set for a good few weeks, probably.

I recommend using Sun Surveyor to plan a Milky Way shot. Photopills is good too, but the street view integration in Sun Surveyor is difficult to beat.

The Global Warning Guy

If you wander down St. Patrick Street in Cork on a Saturday you’re sure to bump into this gentleman who is there in front of Murray’s with his global warning sign. He’s been there most Saturdays since at least 2016.

It turns out he has nothing to do with global warming, the very real danger all of humanity faces. He’s part of an evangelical Christian movement warning about the end times and judgment coming to the Earth.

Luminescence in Azure

When you walk into the Oceanogràfic de València in (guess where) Valencia, you’ll spot large glowing tanks of water. They’re underground, presumably to help keep them cool in the hot Spanish climate and unfortunately, most people just walked straight past them.

Now, I’m not a huge fan of jellyfish, but they’re a beautiful animal to watch from a safe, non-touching, distance. So, of course, I took a bunch of photos of them. 🙂

Looks like someone wasn’t that careful parking here. The poor parking sign is doing an imitation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

Happy new year to you, dear reader. I’ve been posting photos here for twenty years this year. My first image, this yellow flower, is only 700px wide, but with the advent of high-resolution screens I’m not posting 1280px wide ones. I’ve gone through times when I used the featured image of the post instead of embedding it in the post like I did with this one, and that lasted for a year or two. To deal with those posts, I wrote a small function that copies that image into the post if it’s not already there. It seems to be working OK.

Here’s to the next twenty years. Gulp.

I also decided to embrace the new WordPress Twenty Twenty Five theme, and play around with the formatting of blocks. Nothing fancy at all. Just the bare bones, really.

Yesterday, I noticed that Henry was warning us (in Blarney Photography Club) that there was likely going to be a great display of aurora borealis that night. I’m recovering from a cold, so I was just going to stay in and watch TV, which I did. Nothing was going to get me out into the cold night.

I woke up this morning around 2am and saw a message from my sister where she sent on a fabulous photo of the aurora in the sky over her home. Already feeling FOMO, that was the last straw and I got out of bed and drove down to the River Martin walk to photograph the sky silhouetted by the hills on either side. I hoped there would be some sort of reflection in the water of the pool, but it wasn’t strong enough.

I should have gone home then, but I’m glad I drove up to Waterloo Church and you can see some of the photos I took there too.

The temperature had dropped from 2.5C to 0.5C in the time I was out and my camera battery had gone from 57% to 0%, and a torch battery had succumbed to the cold too.

To my eyes, I could see a green glow, but the pink and purple were only really visible in the photos. I could make out the red in the sky behind the church, though. A remarkable display.

There’s a good chance of more aurora tonight. I need to lie down now for a nap. zzzz
