  1. Stamps, Coins and Old Labels

Most of the Mercado Central in Valencia sells food. This stall sold stamps pinned to a board, trays of enamel pins, old banknotes and coins under glass, and a row of faded rum, vermouth and brandy labels along the front. Such a collection of some unusual items and all sorts of things.

  2. Inspecting the Goods

At the Friday market in Bantry the second-hand traders were out in the car park, past the food stalls, with their stock laid out on the tarmac. So much stuff to look at and some bargains to be found if you looked hard enough.

  3. One Boot Down

A woman on a pale bike stopped in the square outside the Mercat Central in Valencia, looking back at something behind me.

A woman and her dog. She was listening to her phone, while her dog sat on her lap.

  5. Wings Up on Cornmarket Street

A crow lifted off the top of the barrier around the old Paintwell shop on Cornmarket Street, Cork, as I approached to get a closer shot. Its friends had already departed, but this one was cleaning its feathers and only looked up a moment before this photo was taken.

  6. A Break in the Doorway

I spotted someone sitting in the doorway of a food truck in Rory Gallagher Place, Cork, and liked the contrasting colours of what I saw.

  7. Gilding the Door on Popes Quay

A man is repainting the front door of St Mary's Dominican Church on Popes Quay. It can be easy to forget that massive buildings that have been there all the time need constant maintenance.

  8. No need for helmets in Athens

The lights were green for pedestrians to cross the road, but these two lads on a bike had already gone through the junction. The driver looked back and zoomed off down a side road....

Two pigeons on the cobbles with a torn piece of bread roll just behind them, both walking away from it. In most cities bread on the ground is gone in seconds. Well-fed pigeons!...

  13. Stall 27

Six people stood at the counter with their backs to me, all of them looking down into the glass case of amber and silver. The wall behind the stallholder was covered with icons and painted crucifixes right up to the arch, under lights warm enough to make the gilding glow. Nobody looked up at any of it. The icons cover the wall, but the jewellery in the case is what people came to buy.

  14. Wheeling Through the Square

The nun was the only person in Market Square moving with any purpose. Everyone else had the tourist walk, slow and drifting or heads tilted up at the scaffolding on St Mary's. She came over the cobbles in sandals with the bike beside her, key swinging from her belt, and went straight past us on her way.

  15. The dogs of Kraków

Three dogs in Kraków over the course of a couple of hours. Only the Pomeranian was doing any work, pulling its owners along for a walk. The dachshund was travelling in style in a pram, and the Maltese was patiently waiting for the conversation to end so the walk could continue. I love to see dogs (and cats!) when I'm travelling.

  17. North Main Street, in Yellow

On North Main Street the two buildings split the frame: grey-blue on the left, worn yellow on the right, with Barnardos and the old Edward B. Sheehan shopfront underneath. A man in a yellow T-shirt walked past the charity shop, a few paces in front of a woman in a yellow cap, phone in hand. The man is about to walk over yellow paving stones in the ground, the woman is walking in front of a yellow building. The bollard between them has a yellow band too. I had just parked the car and come […]

Fingers loosely laced, a thin ring catching the light and that small contact is the whole picture.

  19. The Hen Party in Full Stride

I caught this one on a warm Saturday night in Katowice a few years ago. Somewhere on the Mariacka strip where every other doorway is a bar and the pavement is essentially a parade route. Five women in a loose flying-V, the bride-to-be in white on the right with a tiara, a veil and a sash that does the introductions for her. It's the kind of group you hear before you see. I love that it's not posed: one's mid-laugh, they're all mid-stride, the leader has her arm out like she's parting the Red […]

  20. Northern Lights Over North Cork

You don’t expect to stand in a field north of Blarney and watch the northern lights, but here we are. Last night the aurora put on a show visible well into southern Ireland. Bands of pink and magenta hung across the sky, bleeding into that unmistakable green glow along the horizon. To the naked eye nothing could be seen, but the camera pulled out colours that made the whole scene look otherworldly.

A passing car lit up the bare trees on the ridge at just the right moment, backlighting them with a warm glow that played off the green aurora behind. It was one of those happy accidents you couldn’t plan if you tried. Even the electricity poles added something, a reminder that this was a country road in Cork, not the Arctic Circle. These events have become more frequent as we near solar maximum, so keep an eye on the Kp index and have a dark-sky spot in mind, because the next one might be even better.

  21. Millennium Bridge After Dark

The Millennium Bridge in Cork doesn’t wobble like the Shakey Bridge but it probably sees a lot more foot traffic as it links Pope’s Quay and Kyrl’s Quay and Cornmarket Street.

The bridge was built in 2004. I have some photos of that which I may dig up and link from here later.

  22. Masked Normality: Life in Cork One Year After COVID-19

A year after COVID-19 hit Irish shores and people were still being extra careful, even wearing masks outside where there was little risk of infection.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Here we are in 2026, and people are still denying that COVID-19 was a problem, while there’s a screenshot going around of a tweet by an “MD” who predicted that everyone who got the vaccine would be dead by the end of 2025. We’re still around. LOL.

  23. Future Stars at Cyprus Avenue

The students of Cork Academy of Music took over the stage in Cyprus Avenue last week for a fabulous Christmas concert. For most of them, it was their first time on stage and it was electrifying. The crowd went wild supporting their friends and family and everyone was dancing and having a great time!

  24. Cork’s Halloween Parade Brings Magic to the Street

This is what Cork’s Dragon of Shandon parade does best. It transforms the streets into a moving theatrical spectacular where elaborate costumes, dedicated face paint, choreographed performances, and pure Halloween energy collide in the most brilliant way possible.

  25. The Big Bones Brigade

One of the fabulous skeleton dancers at tonight’s Dragon of Shandon parade in Cork! What a buzz and atmosphere! Crowds were lining North Main Street where we waited, down Castle Street and then on to Cornmarket Street. Amazing night. Not to be missed next year!

  26. The Global Warning Guy

If you wander down St. Patrick Street in Cork on a Saturday you’re sure to bump into this gentleman who is there in front of Murray’s with his global warning sign. He’s been there most Saturdays since at least 2016.

It turns out he has nothing to do with global warming, the very real danger all of humanity faces. He’s part of an evangelical Christian movement warning about the end times and judgment coming to the Earth.

  27. A Splash of Yellow and Red

A couple sitting at an outdoor table in a little café in Athens, Greece about a year ago. Their body language couldn’t be more different, and every time I look at this image, I wonder what they were talking about.

Their roles in this conversation are opposed. He appears relaxed and confident, while she is reserved, nervous, maybe defensive?

  28. Celestial Circles

The sun was particularly active last weekend, promising spectacular aurora with KP values of over 7. Unfortunately, the expected nighttime display failed to materialise. Instead, I swung my camera around and took 10 30-second exposures of the night sky, with the trees of a nearby road.

After combining them in Photoshop this is what you get. Not bad for 300 seconds.

Star trails form circular patterns around the celestial pole due to the Earth’s rotation, and in the Northern Hemisphere, these circles are centred on Polaris, the North Star, which barely moves at all in the sky. I wasn’t sure where Polaris was, but it looks like it’s just off the photo.

  29. Cork City Walks Past Fashion Giants

Advertising goes unnoticed as people hurry past on Opera Lane, Cork.

Did you know the rugby shirt, with its bold stripes, was first popularised in the 19th century?

  30. A Golden Moment

The wide pavement of McCurtain Street is where I spotted a young woman putting the lead on her patient Golden Retriever. He sat there patiently as she fixed the lead in place and continued on their way down the street.

  31. A Four-Legged Historian

Bishop Lucey Park in Cork is surrounded by hoarding with text describing the history of the area. But you don’t want to read about that, do you? That cute little doggy is all any of us wants to see. 🙂

  33. Luminescence in Azure

When you walk into the Oceanogràfic de València in (guess where) Valencia, you’ll spot large glowing tanks of water. They’re underground, presumably to help keep them cool in the hot Spanish climate and unfortunately, most people just walked straight past them.

Now, I’m not a huge fan of jellyfish, but they’re a beautiful animal to watch from a safe, non-touching, distance. So, of course, I took a bunch of photos of them. 🙂
