  1. A quotation from Terry Pratchett

One of the hardest lessons of young Sam’s life had been finding out that the people in charge weren’t in charge. It had been finding out that governments were not, on the whole, staffed by people who had a grip, and that plans were what people made instead of thinking.

    Terry Pratchett (1948-2015) English author
Discworld No. 29, Night Watch (2002)

  6. @TheConversationUK

This is classic #SamVimes. If you buy a cheap pair of boots, they will wear out quicker, you won't be very comfortable either with the looks or the fit, and you'll have to replace them sooner rather than later. Better to buy good quality boots even if they're more expensive.

  7. Happy Father's Day! Sam Vimes explores fatherhood in the later Discworld books. Which of his parenting moments stick with you & why?

Which other fathers in the Discworld do you recall & why?

25 maja przypada rocznica Chwalebnej Rewolucji, kiedy część mieszkańców Ankh-Morpork postawiło na ulicach barykady, by walczyć o Prawdę, Sprawiedliwość, Wolność, Miłość w Przystępnych Cenach i Jajko na Twardo.

  13. @dwcon Well when Sybil is not about lots of 🥓 & named brown sauce*1 given #GNUTerryPratchett once passed a blind #BaconButty🥓 🍞 taste test at a Wadfest camping event & as more than a bit of him is in #SamVimes I would go with that simple recipe accompanied by a big mug of strong tea. Sadly I don't have a photo of the taste test but later in the day he had the energy to take part in live action Thud⤵️

  14. Yet another 25th of May on which I realise that I do not own anything lilac to wear.

Happy Wear The Lilac Day, everyone!

  15. CW: Captain Samuel Vimes ‘Boots’ theory of socioeconomic unfairness

I came across this rather accurate #quote from Terry Pratchett's "Men at Arms" #Discworld novel again:

«The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes ‘Boots’ theory of socioeconomic unfairness.»"
