  1. I enjoy following the real-time #SamuelPepys toots.

This one today outlines his feast yesterday in celebration of his being 'cut of the stone' which is 17th c lingo for surgery (without anaesthetic of course 😱) for a kidney stone.

Surviving that was quite a crap shoot. Probably could've used a bit of broccoli 🥦 in there somewhere though.

  2. #SamuelPepys was born #OnThisDay 1633.

When his diary was first published it was an instant hit, but rumours soon spread about what had been cut and why.

  3. "Strange to see how a good dinner and feasting reconciles everybody."

~ Samuel Pepys, born today, 1633.

" ... and looked over my Lord's lodgings; and Whitehall garden and the Bowling-ally, where lords and ladies are now at bowles ..."

You are at the centre, Sam. High up in the King's administration, at home in Whitehall, now looking at the private amusements of the upper class.

These vignettes have so much cinematic poetry in them.

  7. I'm a little behind on the @samuelpepys toots, but his group of friends currently sounds very much like a Dickens novel.

He's got Goody Gorum, Mr. Hater, and Tom Trice all hanging around lately.

" ... and indeed it is good, though wronged by my over great expectations, as all things else are."

A sharp observation by our #SamuelPepys.

His diary is such a fascinating mix of self awareness and self blindness, all in the style of deadpan factual reporting. Deeply enjoyable.

    Utcunque indeed.

Reminds me of the story told by the great mathematician Paul Halmos in his autobiography:

A two-semester course on Topology. The first part is in the Spring, the second in the Autumn, after a long summer break.

First Autumn lecture. The professor walks in, steps toward the blackboard, chalk in hand. Turns to the class and starts: "Hence, ..."

"... and he would needs take me to the Dolphin, and give me a glass.of ale and a peck of oysters, he and I."

Hastily written, no doubt, by my friend Sam, and perhaps not intended, but there is true poetry in this grammatical construction. The delayed "he and I" at the end echoing the conviviality of the shared meal, long after the sentence is finished.

Well, well, well, .... Pepy's calling a cab off the street when his King has just ruled against it. There is a hidden anarchist in our Sam after all ... !

And he performs this little act of defiance just one day after getting all cheerful when reading about the hanging of the King's opponents.

Pepys as ever acting out so much more than he knows.

  12. The real-time @samuelpepys acct is getting good. He's about to set sail at long last. He's really been winding us up on this pending trip.

One can feel the tension, as taking a sailing voyage must've come with a high risk of not making it back in that era. Many preps of wills, gifts, farewells etc.

I'm not sure where he's going – perhaps a trading trip to the continent?

  13. Happy Birthday to Samuel Pepys, diarist extraordinaire. :ms_birthday_cake:

So glad to have discovered your account. A wonderful project.

As a student in my little college room I always had one of the fat green/blue volumes of the Latham/Matthews edition by my bedsite. Needless to say, my fellow students made liberal use of the word "pretentious" (about me, not Pepys).

    Absolutely adore those laconic entries.

Such a lovely project, thank you!

  15. The @samuelpepys account is posting again! Sharing passages of the historic diarist #SamuelPepys from seventeenth century London.

  16. My last moments before going to sleep are always dedicated to a few days of Samuel Pepys's life. Such a different world, but often just as humdrum as my own daily life.
A good way to shake off the remains of my day.
