    Ein halbes Jahr zuvor hatte Texas im Texanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg die Unabhängigkeit von Mexiko erlangt.

    Houston blieb bis 1838 Präsident und hatte das Amt von 1841 bis 1844 erneut inne, bevor Texas 1845 als Bundesstaat Teil der USA wurde und Houston zwei weitere Jahre Gouverneur (1859–1861) war.
