Muchas gracias 🙌

:saltstack: :docker: I’ve just pushed a preview build of docker-salt-master for Salt 3008.0rc2 🎉
If anyone wants to give it a try before the final release, the image is here:
ghcr.io/cdalvaro/docker-salt-master:3008rc2
If you test it, I’d really love to hear how it goes — especially if you spot regressions or compatibility issues. Thanks a lot 🙌

@vivekanandanks thanks for the interesting post. I want to suggest that the #configmanagememt analogy part (where #ansible sits, and so do several other widely used tools like #saltstack, #puppet, #chef, #cfengine) can be improved. The central premise of configuration management is that current state is dynamic, a moving target. Constantly pruning a growing tree might be a better analogy.

@lkanies @atpfm @siracusa @marcoarment I thought about why Marco and others might consider and then decide #configmanagememt is not needed… here’s where I think it shines normally, whether you use #cfengine or #puppet or #chef or #saltstack or others:
- scale / machine count / OS flavors (count of at least 150 in my experience to justify the investment, while all <100 minis are on the same OS)
- expressing diversity through machine roles and profiles (all of Marco’s machines are managed the same way)
- autonomous drift repair (probably the strongest need, but Marco seems happy doing it himself)
- DSL and wrappers/macros to express intent in an abstract way (but that requires a large investment in learning that DSL)
- dedicated infrastructure for extended functionality like monitoring outcomes and triggering actions (seems not strongly needed for those minis)

I've packaged prusa_exporter and deployed everything (prusa_exporter, prometheus, loki, grafana) on my home server with SaltStack now.
I'm loving it!

New blog post: How I came to know John Cage in the mountains of Western NC and regularly stumble on ways his thinking has helped me navigate complexity.

Roughly 8 years 8 month 8,888 days we started to develop #SaltStack nowadays only #Salt or #SaltProject
What a time, thanks to everyone who contributed!

@mawhrin I think #saltstack is a good choice, the community is pretty decent both in size and in attitude. I feel they will endure through the Broadcom ownership. Currently that’s the best option IMO.
#cfengine is around if you’re looking for speed but the community is small. #mgmtconfig is very new, just had a first release, fun for hackers, and there’s no large company in charge, and of course @purpleidea is awesome.
#ansible is a workhorse, reliable, large community. Puppet and Chef I would not recommend nowadays.

Managed to built in #saltstack manual as #TexInfo Info manual. Just 4.7 MB Gzip compressed. It takes some time to load but it's better than the previous man 7 salt thou.

I’m doing a company training on #saltstack and am curious how others like to structure #configuration_management trainings? Regardless of whether it’s #ansible or #cfengine or #puppet #chef etc. I think there’s got to be some common paths people find easiest to follow.
Do you start with examples of the syntax or with the architecture or do a quick start CLI demo first? How quickly do you dig into writing “hello world” and what directions do you like to explore? What are the hard and the easy parts for you and for the students?

After suffering from bad automation tooling several times I have come to the conclusion that every automation that uses Shell commands inside its code is just over engineered glue code.
Use the tool as intended and use the apis.
Everything else results in an testable and unmaintainable automation

Deployed my first three #Proxmox vm's via #terraform at $DAYJOB. Ubuntu 22.04 with auto-installer baked into the iso. #saltstack picks up afterwards and configures the machines.
Only 110ish more to go before #centos7 end of life deadline on June 30.

I wrote another #blogpost about managing your #DNS via #KnotDNS and #SaltStack, this time about how to #automate / #orchestrate your #TLSA records. http://michal.hrusecky.net/2024/02/salt-dns-web/

Another blog post about how am I managing my #DNS via #KnotDNS and #SaltStack is now online on my blog. This time about handling #SSH keys. #Orchestration can help you with managing your #DNS records 😉 https://michal.hrusecky.net/2024/01/salt-dns-ssh/

I started writing a short blog post series about #orchestration - how am I managing my #DNS server (running #KnotDNS) via #SaltStack. First post is already online: http://michal.hrusecky.net/2024/01/dns-via-salt/

The main problem I was facing wasn't actually related to #riscv although I experimented several times to get the right U-Boot, U-Boot environment, kernel and dtb combo. It ook my a while to figure out how to get #libvirt #LXC working. Was suspecting something missing in kernel config, but in the end it was #cgroups. Had to disable unified hiearchy to get libvirt-lxc working. Weird, but it did the trick. And I also spend quite some time debuging why my minoins can't connect to my #SaltStack master just to realize after few weeks that I changed the #IPv6 subnet on LAN and as my #DNS records are updated via Salt and as the minions can't connect, they were still pointing to the old IP. It was easilly fixed after I got my minions connected again. A little downside of IPv6 is that you easilly miss that one of those many numbers changed.

Migrated from another instance to this one, so here's a new #introduction
👋 :I thought I wanted to become a professional #pilot when I was a teenager. I earned my private pilot's license when I was 17. Going the professional route didn't pan out, thus the handle of "DefectiveWings".
I started off working as an #electricalEngineer when I graduated from college, then did a career shift to IT helpdesk in 2009. Moved to desktop support, systems, and then over to web programming.
I currently work at a small tech company in charge of/ responsible for all things IT and security/audit related (I joined this mastodon so I could follow #infosec information easier). I love #automation, with #saltstack being the tool of choice for #linux and #pdq for #windows at $DAYJOB.
I enjoy #php, #GravCMS, and #Drupal7.
I've been a #gamer almost my entire life. If you ever played any of the Descent series, I'll insta-follow you :)
I hope to get swap funny IT stories with you and maybe learn a thing or two from y'all.
