  1. I've just dabbled in alternative processes in the past, but I'm well aware of the intricacies involved in the method, from the creation of a #digitalNegative, to the preparation of emulsion, developer and toner solutions. It's no walk in the park, and Karsten has done an outstanding work, a true wizard of the art.
    Thank you @toxi !

  6. Just received the #kallitype @toxi has done from one of my photos. Oh wow! Such a beautiful thing! I'm impressed by its qualities, the level of detail it shows even in the deeper shadows and lighter tones, the richness in it's tonality and the slight, almost imperceptible, warm hue.

  11. @thereisnocat Do you know the wavelength of your UV light? If your lows aren't getting dark enough in such a long time, it might indicate your UV light's wavelength isn't optimal. 365nm is supposedly best, but I found it harder to find decent options. So mine are 385nm (40W) and 395nm (200W) and the corresponding exposure times and distances are only: ~1:45min (4 inch) and ~2:40min (16-20 inch). For the latter, I initially also used a sheet of paper to diffuse the light more (for larger prints), but that extended the exposure time to ~17mins for not any noticeable difference...

(Btw. This is all for kallitype, but should equally apply for salt)

  16. Short progress update of refining my Kallitype recipe & workflow:

    - Left: a couple of months ago, initial homemade formula, very rusty brown, blotchy and low contrast
    - Middle: mid December, double coating, no more staining, better contrast, but not fully cleared emulsion
    - Right: last night, pre-wetting plus ammonium dichromate (1 drop) for much better contrast, perfect clearing (without any masking)

    Progress! 🤩

  17. Oh wow! Thank you everyone for all the comments & pointers — I'm still in the darkroom (trying out different variations) and will respond more later/tomorrow. So very nice to see that there's quite some interest in this after all! I shall keep on using the #AltProcess & #SaltPrint hashtags and look forward to seeing what others are working on. I will also post a compiled list of accounts & links people have mentioned in the replies here! Thank you! 🙏

  18. Looking for other people here who're interested in analog "alt process" photography (especially Kallitype & salt prints in general) and who are also making their own prints. There used to be a few more such people in my TL, but they all seem to have vanished or stopped posting in the past year, and generally it feels there's precious little interest in this topic on Mastodon... (I too have a feeling, either my own photography went drastically downhill over the past 3-4 months or people in my circles are just less and less interested in it, or maybe don't get to see it all... Hello self-doubt! 😩)

Anyhow, if you are interested in these topics, please like or boost so I can follow back! Much appreciated! It's very hard to find peers in such niche topics whilst on a tiny single user instance...

Ps. Also, if not Mastodon, any other communities/forums you might be able to recommend?

  19. A silent scenery in four acts...

(Selenium-toned[1] 4x6 salt print (still in final wash) plus previous work-in-progress stages... see alt text for details)

The picture/motif itself is one of my personal favorites and was taken 4 years ago in the Alpstein massif, when clouds were spontaneously forming around us, creating a wonderful light/scene/drama and a dear memory... now also as print which likely will/can outlast myself

[1] The tones will become more neutral once dry...

  20. @tmcfarlane Thanks! Both of the pictures were just taken on an iPhone 6, so I was pretty happy how they turned out. I also agree, the 2nd pic would have needed some more back & forth tweaking the tone curve for the negative...

OCAC closing down was very sad indeed, I loved that place! They ran out of funding in 2019, after 112 years of existence[1]... Also sad that platinum toning is basically completely unaffordable by now (25ml for $255). The price has doubled since 2018, with most of the increase in the past 6 months. Palladium also quadrupled, but has come down again (25ml for ~$160). Thankfully there are other cheaper options (gold, selenium etc.) which provide similar tones & permanance...

  21. #ThrowbackThursday Platinum printing session at the now defunkt Oregon College of Art and Craft. The pictures are from an unforgettable winter hike in the Eagle Creek valley, just a few days prior (and 6 months before a wild fire consumed the entire valley)...

  22. My husband, Paul Barden, is an analog photographer. A couple weeks ago, I 3D printed a lens board so he could attach a 1950s Ektar lens on his 8x10 camera. This is the first print that I've seen from the combination.

This a moment in the final stages of creating a #saltprint. Specifically, he is gold toning this print.

Chemical photography is an amazing art form.

  23. @viewfinderCurator I have two areas of interest:
    1) art nudes - still figuring out hashtags #ArtNude gets good work but misses a fair amount. #Nude or #nsfw are too broad.

    2) Historic processes - you’ll get some under #AltProcess, also some under specific processes, e.g. #cyanotype #tintype #kallitype #saltprint

  24. CW: Cat photo

A gold-toned salt print of CJ, printed at a workshop on digital negatives at the George Eastman House back pre-pandemic. I use a modification of the technique I learned there for my digital negatives for historic processes. And CJ is always willing to help out as model!
