  1. Today is Saint Andrew's Day. He is the patron saint of Scotland. Tradition says that he was crucified on an X shaped cross called a saltire.

If you ever need to programmatically draw a Scottish saltire in R...

  3. Legend has it that the Scottish flag came into being before a battle when the sun shining through the clouds formed what's known as St Andrew's cross, and blessed the Scots with certain victory.

Total myth of course. The flag design in fact originates from Scotland being a land of rock, sheep and fathomless bog. The warning sign to travellers "pass ye not the bog" was an obvious form for the national flag to take to warn off the English.

    From today's bog walk:

  4. Taken this day, 2014, Scottish and Catalonian flags laid out in coloured candles in Parliament Square, as everyone wondered what the result of the Indy referendum would be flickr.com/photos/woolamaloo_g

There was such a wonderful atmosphere in Edinburgh that night. Sigh.

  5. Eric Liddell centenary celebration window, looking out onto a scene he would have known well, Holy Corner. Appropriately from the community hub that is named after him in #Bruntsfield , commemorating a century since his famous "Chariots of Fire" moment at the 1924 Paris Olympics.

I love the Scottish Saltires & French tricolors. Vive the Auld Alliance!

  6. For #SaintAndrewsDay : took this while walking in 2009, passed Castle Street, looked up and saw two jet vapour trails in the sky, crossed like the Saltire, right above #Edinburgh Castle flickr.com/photos/woolamaloo_g
It reminded me of the myth of the cross of St Andrew appearing in the sky before a pivotal battle, & being adopted as a Scottish symbol thereafter.

  7. I'm not at #AUOB #AUOBGlasgow today, because I'm still not really well enough. But my #Saltire, my #Estelada and my #Trans #Pride flag are all there!

  8. @MadeyeTheCarnaptious

If I lived in #scotland I would not purchase products with #unionist propaganda printed on them

I do purchase (in London) product with the #saltire on it.

Money talks - those supermarkets emblazoning union flags on packaging are reducing their sales north of the border.

  9. @hughster

Like I said - #labour is a unionist party as much as the #tory party is

    No surprise

If I were the #snp I would look for more legislation to pass in #holyrood that is popular in #scotland but intolerable to all the #wokeAllergic #toriesOut and get them to ban #scotland from doing more stuff within their own borders

Maybe something about gender-neutral toilets, banning school uniforms or enforcing the planting of the #saltire on all public buildings?

  10. This fantastic photo immediately made me think of Joan of Arc. The central figure (holding the Saltire shield) is Scottish independence activist Laura Marsh (AKA Alba Laura).

The photo was taken on a street, somewhere in Catalonia, by Marc Puig i Pérez. The gathering was part of a rally in support of the Catalan political prisoners.

  11. The Clyde Bar,
    Helensburgh, Scotland.

I get the feeling they might be proudly Scottish, don't know why, just a feeling.
