  3. The Sponsored Swim That Ended an Era

Standing below these rusted iron stanchions, I cannot help reflecting on how coincidentally a name can turn up twice in as many weeks. Kathleen Elizabeth Mary Cooper Abbs, the last person to live in the Arts and Crafts house built among the ruins of Mount Grace Priory.

She was nobody’s idea of a quiet tenant. A classical scholar with the constit ...

  5. Saltburn Sands From North Bank

North Bank is the steep cliff behind the Ship Inn at Old Saltburn, and not many know the National Trust owns it. I went there today for a bioblitz. That is jargon for an intensive, time-limited hunt to record every living thing on a patch of land, in this case bumblebees, butterflies, wildflowers, whatever moved or grew, my phone with its app ...

  7. Love this view on the coast at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, which lies within the historic boundary of the North Riding of Yorkshire.
In the foreground, the seafront pier, dating from 1867, stretches out 681 feet into the North Sea (although it was low tide when I took this photograph!).
The sandy beaches are quite expansive and author of 'Tristram Shandy' Laurence Sterne is said to have enjoyed using them for chariot racing.
The sands were also put to good use by speed record breaker Sir Malcolm Campbell, setting a record of 138.08 mph while driving 'Blue Bird' on Saltburn Sands on 17 June 1922.
Dominating the coastal landscape is Hunt Cliff, topped by Warsett Hill at 166 metres (545 ft).
Both the Cleveland Way long distance footpath and the King Charles III England Coast Path traverse along the cliff edge, heading south towards Skinningrove and the historic fishing village of Staithes.

  10. Grinding Up Saltburn Bank

These female athletes are grinding up Saltburn Bank in the 2026 East Cleveland Classic cycle race. They look powerful, focused, and gloriously free. In the 1890s, those same faces would have been handed a medical diagnosis. Doctors called it “Bicycle Face”.
Victorian critics insisted that women’s “delicate” bodies were simply not built for the ...

  21. A Heart over The Ship Inn

Is that a heart floating above The Ship Inn at Old Saltburn. Charming. The pilot must have been struck by a fit of sentiment, or perhaps simply bored stiff.

Back in the eighteenth century this tiny fishing village beneath Huntcliff and the ever-so-subtle Cat Nab managed to support four inns, plus enough gin shops to pickle an army. Today only the Ship survives. All of th ...
