  1. I have all sorts of mixed feelings about this piece, some arising from the music itself, others emerging from a web of personal associations, passions, and uncertainties.

Is this great music or something more like an elaborate firework display? Does this question even have a sensible answer?

  2. (Also, re-tooting the BABE clip) 3/3

If I had words to make a day for you
    I'd sing you a morning
    Golden and true
    I would make this day
    Last for all time
    Then fill the night
    Deep in moonshine
If I had words to make a day for you
    I'd give you a morning
    Golden and true
    I would make this day
    Last for all time...

  3. Here's the piece being played by Timothy Noon on the giant organ in the last toot. Maybe lets do one more toot for the lyrics Farmer Hoggett sings to this. (2/3)

  4. This image steals my breath away. The massive organ pipes framing the organist. It's like a temple, it's like space rockets. It's like a giant mouth. What he's playing is the organ finale from Saint-Saens's Symphony No. 3, known to some of initially from the movie BABE.

Link here is to the sung version in the movie, see next toot to the symphony version that the screenshot is from. (1/3)

    Saint-Saëns: ORATORIO DE NOËL

Wenn es mal nicht das geliebte Bach’sche Weihnachtsoratorium sein soll: ich entdecke gerade dieses wunderbare Stück Musik.
Festlich, dramatisch, abwechslungsreich - mal sakral, mal opernhaft.
Ich wundere mich, warum es mir bisher noch nie untergekommen ist. Eine echte Entdeckung.

  7. Musical Interlude: More Saint-Saëns! I just have to throw in this last bit. When I first heard it many years ago, I thought it sounded impossibly Gothic, like something from a horror film....but then I turn around and it was used as the theme for sweet film "Babe"! (Remember that nice movie with the talking pig?) Anyway, here it is...judge for yourself...

"Symphony No. 3 "Organ", Finale," composed by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by the Auckland Symphony.

  8. Musical Interlude: How about a whole concerto? I'm fond of this one, written in Luxor, and the second movement is inspired by traditional Egyptian music.

"Piano Concerto No. 5 in F Major (Egyptian)," composed by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano, backed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons.

  9. Musical Interlude: Kick off your weekend with some virtuosic piano! I spent the morning listening to wonderful piano works and loved this piece.

"Allegro appassionato in C-sharp minor," composed by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by Roland Descharmes on piano, with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra.

  12. NP: symphony. Yes, of course I'll put the loud bit on repeat for a bit once we get there.

  13. Found while looking for a solo piano transcription of "Printemps qui commence" from Saint-Saëns' *Samson et Dalila*:

a transcription of another of that work's great arias, "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" but arranged for #MARIMBA or #XYLOPHONE.

Not sure why but this tickled me so. Image is the catalog entry.

  14. One of Saint-Saëns most famous works, The Carnival of the Animals, composed in 1886, was actually written as a joke. Saint-Saëns refused to allow it to be performed for fear it might damage his reputation as a serious composer. The only part of the work he allowed to be performed was The Swan, which became the music to which Anna Pavlova danced The Dying Swan.
