I had no idea what was growing in one of my old soil bags from last year and I'm glad I didn't cut it off.

It has really unpleasantly sharp edges and tags and had to move it or the side because I kept hitting it going between that and the ever growing cherry tomato tree that is now 2 years old

It turns out that is actually a quiet common flower and I may end up getting some good seeds from it. It can be good to plant them in place of a fence!

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) is a highly branched, herbaceous, thistle-like annual plant in the family Asteraceae. It is commercially cultivated for vegetable oil extracted from the seeds and was used by the early Spanish colonies along the Rio Grande as a substitute for saffron. Plants are 30 to 150 cm (12 to 59 in) tall with globular flower heads having yellow, orange, or red flowers.
