Good to see that Drug User Liberation Fund founders will not be facing jail time. And good to see that the government has been directed to change Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

We need to stop this idea that drug diversion of any kind is bad. If safe supply is diverted, it means safe supply is supplanting illicitly produced drugs. It means people are safer.
Diversion of safe supply is still safe supply.

When it comes to #reporting on #NorthAmerica’s #OverdoseCrisis — the worst in our history — #misleading articles can increase #stigma against people who use #drugs, skew the public’s understanding of the issue, inspire #BadFaith policy and make it more difficult for other #journalists to gain the trust and respect of #MarginalizedCommunities.
Which brings me to a splashy, new piece of drug #journalism from U.K.-based newspaper the Telegraph, falsely claiming that #decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of drugs “made #Vancouver the #fentanyl capital of the world.”
The Telegraph’s story, like others before it, makes a number of other #misleading claims, including stating that #SafeSupply programs, which provide pharmaceutical alternatives to street drugs, are making the situation worse because that supply is being sold to street users, including young people. Some safe supply is being diverted, but there is no evidence that it’s led to more deaths or teens forming new addictions.
Reporting like this misses important context about the #DrugCrisis, allowing #politicians to drum up fear about #HarmReduction rather than confront how decades of #prohibition have impacted the current #FentanylCrisis. After the 2010s crackdown on prescription pain pills, many people dependent on #opioids turned to heroin instead. Eventually, #DrugTraffickers began cutting heroin with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger, that is also cheaper and simpler to make and smuggle.

In my home province of #NewBrunswick our autocrat #oilExec #premier #blaineHiggs is attempting to #criminalize #drugAddiction and #homelessness. He's already threatened to use the #NotWithstanding clause to force his new "mandatory addictions treatment" bill through.
We have ZERO space in addictions programs.
We have ZERO free beds in hospitals.
We have a BRAND NEW jail being built that no one knows why.The people on our streets will be rounded up and left to rot in overcrowded lockups where they will NOT receive adequate medical treatment, nor the financial and social services they **ACTUALLY NEED**.
It's actions like these that have caused A DOZEN of his own party members to resign.
Let's all stand up against this dehumanizing attack!

The ‘overdose’ crisis is really a poisoning crisis brought on by a crisis of houselessness and desperation.
The first solutions are simple: make sure people have a roof, food, support, care.
Stop blaming people for being under the bus when we are the ones who put them there, and for God’s stop throwing people under the bus!
Every person is infinitely and uniquely valuable: let’s start treating each that way.

Funny thing is that this was never referred to by anyone as an ‘overdose’, but instead as ‘alcohol poisoning’.
Why? Because he had a home.
Somehow - because he had access to people, money, care - he was not blamed for what happened; it was a medical issue rather than a moral failing.

we have an epidemic of drug poisonings bc we would rather victim blame than provide a safe supply to desperate people who are being poisoned.
If you care about people the solution to poisoning is safe supply: dead people can’t receive treatment, dead people can’t find housing, dead people can’t reconnect with loved ones.
It’s beginning to seem like maybe that’s the point.
